Small Groups Especially for Women

SPIRITUAL GROWTH
MISSOURI UNITED METHODIST WOMEN (UMW) is comprised of 13 small groups called circles or interest groups.
Although groups vary in structure and emphasis, all reflect the UMW purpose and incorporate its four aspects in
their programming or activities: spiritual growth, education, local and global missions, and supportive fellowship.
All of the small groups welcome new members. The Unit - the full body meets together three times a year and is
open to forming new circles and/or interest groups as requested. Each small group establishes its own meeting
schedule. All are welcome.

HANDS-ON MISSION PROJECTS

These UMW small groups focus more on mission projects that involve hands-on participation. When they gather,
they keep their hands busy sewing, quilting, and volunteering. All of these groups find ways to provide for the needs
EDUCATION of Gods people through tangible means. Groups that emphasize hands-on mission are Esther circle, Sophia Circle,
Prayer Shawl Ministry, and the MUMC Quilters.

FUNDRAISING FOR MISSIONS

Although most of the circles and interest groups find ways to participate in projects that raise funds for mission,
several of the small groups do major fund raising: Breakfast Group, Searcy-Feely Circle, Sophia Circle, and Vals Circle.

THE UMW READING PROGRAM

One way the organizing body of UMW supports education is through the UMW reading program. Each year, books
HANDS-ON MISSION are suggested in five categories: Nurturing for Community, Social Action, Spiritual Growth, Education for Mission,
and Leadership Development. Books from each category are available in the UMW closet off of the parlor, and
many of them can found at the community library. A complete list of suggested reading can be attained from the
Reading Program Coordinator.

BOOK CLUBS
Two book clubs have been formed as interest groups: First Monday Book Group and the MUMC Book Club.

LOCAL MISSIONS
The local UMW unit supports local mission in several ways. The Wardrobe is staffed by UMW volunteers the fourth
SUPPORTIVE FELLOWSHIP Wednesday of each month from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In addition, the UMW budget supports eight local missions.
