3 TRANSVERSE ANALYSIS

3.1 INTRODUCTION

This calculation sheet covers the preliminary transverse design of special


crossing 55m-78m-55.844m for KVMRT SSP Line Package V209.

The design is carried out in accordance with BS 5400 Part 4, BD37/01 and
Design Statement whichever relevant and analysis of the sections have been
conducted using MIDAS.
MIDAS Model Ref:
This report will outline the general arrangement of the deck section in question,
the properties of the associated construction materials and reinforcement details
and identify the loads applied to the section through modeling of the structure.
A brief explanation of the modeling and analysis procedure, as well as any
assumptions made will also be provided, including consideration of load
combinations and support conditions wherever applicable.
The analysis of this section will identify the amount of reinforcement required
within each part of the section, subsequently enabling the reinforcement to be
detailed appropriately. This task will be undertaken under ultimate limit state
condition.

3.2 LOADS

All loads considered in the analysis of the sections are applied in conjunction
with the Design Statement and in accordance with BS 5400 Part c or BD 37
whichever is relevant.

The loads under consideration in the transverse design of the deck sections are
as outlines below.

The typical cross section of the deck showing the layout of the rails, parapet,
superimposed dead loads, etc is as shown in Fig.3.1.

The trains loading shall comprise fully loaded trains with individual cars each
having four (4) axles of 160kN as shown in Figure 3.2. This load pattern shall be
placed at the most critical position to generate maximum stress for the part of
structure considered. Thus, in MIDAS, the VTL loads are applied as point loads
with the axle loads being dispersed by the rail to the sleepers and subsequently
through the trackform plinth into the deck. As the sleepers and plinths are in
unity, the axle loads are longitudinally and transversely dispersed evenly.

It is assumed that the thickness of the sleeper and the transform plinth is 250mm.

(Remark: As the depth of the trackform plinth and sleeper might vary along the
deck, minimum depth of 250mm is taken in the design. Yet, a depth of greater
than 250mm would doubtless yield lower values of load effects as the wheel load
is spread wider.

Thus, in the design, the axle load is assumed to be disperse within area of
1050mm x 1050mm

The transverse analysis is design to satisfy the serviceability limit state (SLS)
and ultimate limit state (ULS) under the following load combinations.

3.4 MIDAS MODEL

The transverse model is formed of plate elements assigned with the appropriate
material properties and depth. Figure 3.3 illustrates the node position in the
model, whereas Figure 3.4 depicts the screenshot of the whole 3 dimension
model (3D) with element numbering.

Boundary conditions are applied to the bottom slab at both ends using fully fixed

restraints and directional restrains to model the bearing articulations.

Loads are applied to the span in accordance with the specifications of the
design statement. Loads representative of rail loading are applied as point loads
at the location of the relevant rail position as shown in Figure 3.5 and Figure 3.6.
