Achievement." NEA Report: Lack of Teacher Diversity Jeopardizes Student Achievement (2014):
2) The article is question is written by an NEA Today journalist, Edward Graham. The
article discusses how despite schools recently being predominantly occupied by minority
students, the teacher that work there remain to be primarily from European backgrounds. The
author states that in the past there were efforts to hire teachers from more diverse backgrounds,
but in recent years there has been a decline in the attention that this issue has received. The
author claims that two decades ago, 26% of the teaching population included teachers of color.
As of 2014, that number has declined to 18%, despite there being a drastic increase of minorities
3) I think it is important to recognize that our teachers are primarily of European descent.
This is worth recognizing because it is hard to give children a multicultural education when the
ones who are teaching them come from a similar background. I think ideally we not only have
more minorities teaching, but people who are native born to other countries. This will open the
flood gates for multicultural education, allowing our children to learn from people who have first
hand experience other cultures and be able to learn from their point of views.
