Practicum Goal and Focus

The main focus for this practicum experience learning about instructing an online course. The student will

coordinate/instruct/guide an online course with two other colleagues under the direct supervision of a preceptor. The

desired goals include reviewing the current course content and assessing if there should be any changes or revisions

made. The student will learn about editing an online course. The student will also gain experience in all aspects of

effective online instruction. In addition, the student will review the course resources, including the required e-book

and make recommendations for ensuring proper APA formatting.

D1: Summary of Outcomes, Activities, and Evidence (Weeks 1-4)

a. Practicum Outcomes: The practicum outcomes that have been met thus far include: Participating in the curriculum review of

colleagues, engaging in student assessment, gaining experience regarding program assessment, and
achieving a better understanding of Moodle functionality and tools.

Participating in curriculum review has been met by the co-instructors reviewing the VLDD course both
independently and within several group meetings and finally with a presentation on the proposed
changes with our preceptor. All of the proposed changes were accepted and implemented.
The demonstration of effective professional conduct has been met thus far by attending weekly
meetings with Dr. Deane and more frequent meetings with each other. However, this is an outcome that
requires continuous effort on the behalf of the co-instructors, and even though it is met at this point
within the practicum experience, it does not mean that it will continue to be met without hard work and
dedication throughout the rest of the practicum experience, by the co-instructors.

The co-instructors have been engaging in student assessment thus far by providing the VLDD students
comprehensive feedback to their M1 discussions and assignments and their M2 discussions and
assignments. This outcome will require continuous monitoring as well to ensure that the co-instructors
continue to engage in student assessment. The co-instructors have received positive feed back from the
preceptor on the responses posted to students.

The co-instructors gained experience regarding program assessment by attending a zoom room meeting
that discussed the process of compliance assist with Dr. Deane. The meeting provided an overview of
what assessment is and why it is needed for the program. Dr. Deane showed an overview of
compliance assist and how it helps link SLO to program outcomes and how assignments are linked to
SLO to prove the outcomes are met. This meeting was informative and showed another component of
the nurse educator role not many new educators may not know about.

The co-instructors were also able to achieve a better understanding of Moodle functionality and tools
by attending a zoom room meeting with Dr. Digger, who gave a Moodle tutorial. Each week we have
also learned about other functions of Moodle, Dr. Deane presented a quick video on how to embed a
video into a discussion without using a hyperlink. There have been other technical issues that have
required trouble shooting and reaching out for technical assistance from others to help solve the
problems. All the problems to date have been resolved and navigating Moodle gets easier and easier
each week.

The one learning outcome that has not met thus far within the practicum experience is to gain
professional insight for growth and development as a nurse educator. However, even with that being
said, this outcome is partially met as the co-instructors have already gained wealth of professional
insight regarding online instruction, but there has not been enough time to fully develop the desired
skills as the VLDD course is only 50% of the way completed.
b. Activities completed: Completed activities began with reviewing the VLDD course with the co-instructors, including in-

C)? to coordinate co-instructor responsibilities through numerous meetings and group messaging.

The students have been provided with comprehensive feedback by the co-instructors through reading
the class discussions and assignments, and offering additional insight to each student. In addition, the
co-instructors have collaboratively developed weekly announcements to assist with guiding the
students though the VLDD course. The co-instructors divided the students up prior to the start of the
VLDD course so that each co-instructor would respond to the same group of students throughout the
entire course. The co-instructors discussed breaking up the weeks and decided that with such a short
course and with so much going on that we would all monitor the chat lounges and virtual office and not
make out an assignment of who will monitor what when.

The co-instructors had a zoom room meeting with Dr. Deane at 1000 on 3/28/17 and Dr. Deane
reviewed the process of compliance assist.

The co-instructors had a zoom room meeting with Dr. Digger at 1700 on 3/14/17 and Dr. Digger gave a
Moodle tutorial to the co-instructors.

When developing the initial learning contract the co-instructors had originally planned to update the
reference list for the eBook, so that the references were in proper APA formatting. However, after
talking with Dr. Deane, it has been decided that it will no longer be done at this time because the co-
instructors have already accrued numerous practicum hours, and there is just not enough time to do the
additional work within this practicum.

In progress the co-instructors are working on a course evaluation tool to be use the last week of the
course. This tool is still being worked out but will be present to the preceptor prior to being
implemented in to the classroom.

Instead of a screen shot of changes made to the module three, we choose to just copy the changes into
the word document we made to discussion three. We made other small changes in the VLDD course
that are also outlined in the word document.

D2: Summary of Outcomes, Activities, and Evidence (Weeks 5-7)

a. Practicum Outcomes: The practicum outcomes that have been met during the final weeks of instructing the VLDD course

attending weekly meetings with Dr. Deane and more frequent meetings with each other. This outcome
required continuous effort on the behalf of the co-instructors, to be met throughout the course. The co-
instructors have been engaging in student assessment throughout this course by providing the VLDD
students comprehensive feedback to their discussions and assignments. This outcome has also required
continuous monitoring to ensure that the co-instructors continued to engage in student assessment.
Then next the co-instructors have gained a wealth of insight for growth and development as a nurse
educator by actually instructing the VLDD course which in return allows for a great deal of reflection
regarding the educational experience, transitioning from the student role to the instructor role, and
identifying areas of improvement for future VLDD courses.

b. Activities completed: The co-instructors have been continuing to provide students with comprehensive

students though the VLDD course. The co-instructors continue to respond to the
same group of students since the onset of the course. However, one of the co-
instructors had a student drop out of the course during week two, and then she
started responding to one of the students for the co-instructor, who initially have
4 students to respond to.

Then in regards to gaining professional insight for growth and development as a

nurse educator, the co-instructors reviewed an existing course evaluation and
made modifications so that it applied to the VLDD course and then uploaded it
into the classroom. Then the co-instructors reviewed the feedback, which offered
additional insight from the students perspective. Through the experience of
actually teaching the VLDD course as well as being past students of the VLDD
course it allowed the co-instructors to identify areas for improvement for future
classes. Then on May 2nd, 2017 the co-instructors held a zoom room panel
discussing the co-instructors perspective regarding the educational experience,
the evaluation findings, transitioning from the student role to the instructor role,
how TPACK skills have been affected/developed, ideas for improvement for future
VLDD courses, and then an open forum for the faculty to ask specific questions.
