Lesson: ELA (Introduction to fantasy as a genre) ELA Common Core Standard W5.3

Standard 1: Demonstrate Leadership Proficient

1a. Ms. Grubb took steps to maintain a safe and orderly classroom, correcting students about voices and
movement in the classroom while maintaining the dignity of students.

1b. Ms. Grubb participates in collaborative professional learning with her CE, co-teacher, and fifth grade
team.

Standard 2: Respectful Environment - Proficient

2b. Ms. Grubb modeled respect for all while encouraging students to participate. Students behaved
respectfully toward each other. Ms. Grubb displayed knowledge of different cultures and treated this
diverse group of children with unconditional positive regard.

2d. Ms. Grubb used flexible grouping to meet the needs of all students. Ms. Grubb individualized for
some students and Ms. Jarrett worked with a small group for a short period of time.

Standard 3: Teacher Knows the Content - Proficient

3a. The lesson objective is aligned with the NCSCOS and based on the district curriculum map and
resources. I have observed Ms. Grubb participating in collaborative planning with the fifth grade team.

3b. Ms. Grubb demonstrated an understanding of the language arts content and appropriate methods
for delivery of instruction. Ms. Grubb varied instruction with video, paired reading, reading aloud,
graphic organizers, modeling, and writing. The lesson was paced well with frequent shifts that kept
students engaged.

Standard 4: Facilitation of Learning Proficient

4b. Ms. Jarrett (CE) and the fifth grade team praise Ms. Grubb for her contributions to the creation of
team learning targets and learning notebooks.

4d. Ms. Grubb effectively integrated technology in the lesson with learning notebooks on the
whiteboard. There was good use of video and technology to engage students and for the teacher to
model completion of the graphic organizer.

4h. Ms. Grubb monitored student learning through observation and with questions to check for
understanding.
Standard 5: Teachers Reflect Developing

5a. Ms. Grubb uses multiple data sources to improve student learning. Ms. Grubb regularly reflects on
her practice and uses this self-knowledge for improvement.

Summary:

Ms. Grubb began the day with a language arts lesson on fantasy, the introduction of the genre prior to a
writing unit with students writing their own fantasy stories. Ms. Grubb greeted students by name as
they entered and engaged students in morning work as others arrived. Ms. Grubb engaged students in
vocabulary work prior to and following morning announcements, and then reviewed the vocabulary
mini-lesson.

Ms. Grubb introduced new learning by reviewing the learning targets and criteria and reviewed
elements of the fantasy genre. Ms. Grubb taught with video, handouts, text and images helping
students connect learning with their prior knowledge. Students participated enthusiastically in guided
practice activities reading, writing, and speaking about elements of fiction fluently.

Throughout the lesson Ms. Grubb treated all students with respect, correcting some behavior (Why are
you out of your seat?) and encouraging others (Sit up.). Students responded well to Ms. Grubb and
each other. It was clear that rules and expectations had been taught and reinforced.

Question for Reflection:

Most response opportunities appeared to be directed to volunteers. (Please check on the

video.) Though Ms. Grubb checked student progress well with questions asked and distributed
questions to many students around the room they all appeared to be directed to those with
hands raised. If this is correct, some response opportunities should be directed at random to
check for understanding.
