Reflection from prior lesson: This lesson is about learning three strategies that can help us comprehend even further
what we are reading. I will teach the students three strategies (before, during and after reading) to use when reading
an informational text in order to increase their comprehension of the text.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:3.RI.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text,
referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
Lesson Objectives: Taught three explicit reading strategies, students will answer questions about the text, pulling
examples from the text with 90% accuracy.

Materials Needed:

-Anticipation guides (pre-printed)


-Pencils
-Paper
-Whiteboard
-Printed out dolphin articles
-Learning Logs

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: Each student at Rustic Acres is an ESL student. There are 9 students in
grades 3-8. There are 7 boys and 2 girls. There are no students on formal IEPS. However, there is one student who
has to move around in order to concentrate he is permitted to do this to a certain extent.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

relating to past experience and/or knowledge Raise your hand if you have ever formed an opinion
about anything youve ever read. We all have, right?
creating a need to know I will hand you something called Anticipation Guides. I have written
statements. You will simply tell me if you agree with them or not. Give students time to complete
survey.
sharing objective, in general terms Today, you will be learning three strategies to help you
understand what you are learning. What you just completed were statements or inferences straight from
the article we are about to read.

2. Content Delivery (30 mins)


a. Modeling Teacher will model Learning Log example with prompts straight from students
assignment. Teacher will use the book Inkheart that the class is currently reading.
b. Article and Learning Log Students will complete Learning Logs while they are reading their article.

c. After Reading Teacher will demonstrate use of after-reading strategy called GIST. Students will
answer who, what, when, where, why and how of the text, and then use those answers to help them
summarize the text in just 15 words. This is known as finding the gist of an article.
3. Closure (5 mins)
a. Teacher will invite some students to share their GIST statements.

i. Leveled Passages- Different passages will be given to each grade, so that their passage fits within their
comprehension level.

Reflection: The students have never used any of these strategies except for a portion of the GIST strategy. All three
strategies deepened their understanding of the text. I will use these strategies, and other Janet Allen strategies in the
future.
