COM 110-023 Outline
- Introduction planned parent hood isnt scary
o Many news outlets, politicians, and organizations try to demonize planned
parent hood because they offer a controversial service
o Im not going to try to convince you or tell you (the audience) that this
certain service is ethical or not
o Im here to tell you that Planned Parenthood is more than just that one
servic
o Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that provides health care
services in the United States and globally
- Many have argued that Planned Parenthood should be shut down because they
dont want to pay for abortions, through federal tax dollars
o Not all of Planned Parenthoods revenue comes from the federal
government
o According to FactCheck.org, Planned Parenthoods government funding
comes from two sources: the Title X Family Planning Program and
Medicaid. About $70 million is Title X funding, Planned Parenthood
spokesman Tait Sye told us. The rest about $293 million is Medicaid
funding, which includes both federal and state money.
o Planned Parenthood could not use the federal money they receive
towards abortions
o There is already a law, known as the Hyde Amendment, that already
prohibits the use of the federal money on abortions, except in special
cases (rape, incest, or if the womans life is in danger)
- Some have argued that abortion is the only, or main, service they provide, this
is simply not true
o Here is a pie chart showing the percentage of their services provided
(show picture)
o According to Planned Parenthoods annual report (2013), out of the 10.6
million total services provided, there were:
4.1 million tests and treatment for STIs/STDs
3.6 million contraception related services
935573 cancer screenings (includes breast exams and pap tests)
1.1 million pregnancy tests and prenatal services
Planned Parenthood does not only provide womens health care
services, according to their official website, provides mens health
care services too!
