OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will be able to understand why Fanny Mendelssohns work was not
discovered until much later after her death.
2. Students will be able to recognize Fanny Mendelssohns 6 Lieder, Op. 9 Movement 1:
Die Ersehnte.
3. Students will be able to understand the times of Fanny Mendelssohn by connecting it
to the event of the first picture ever taken.
PROCEDURES:
1. Introduce Fanny Mendelssohn as a Romantic period composer. Relate the struggle
between Fanny and Felix to the audience and their siblings (Have you ever felt you had to
compete with a sibling, whether it be in sports or academics, or maybe even music?).
2. Go through Fanny Mendelssohns life history and use lesson notes as a reference.
3. Introduce 6 Lieder, Op. 9 Movement 1: Die Ersehnte and include the stylistic features
as well as the form of the composition in accordance with the lesson notes.
4. Show the Princess story.
5. Transition into the First Photograph. Explain what this process was like during the
time. Refer to lesson notes.
