Title of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub
URL of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: http://www.KidPub.com/ Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your classroom: Students will be able to write an opinion piece about their favorite geographic region of Georgia while we learn about this in Science. They will discuss their favorite region along with the plants, animals and habitats included in that region. When students complete their writing pieces they will publish them on KidPub.com where their peers and other students will be able to view them. What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? Students will need a computer with internet access to complete this project. Students will hand write their first draft of their writing piece and then type it to submit to KidPub. Students will use notes from class and textbooks to find information to use in their writing. Students may also do further research online about the region they choose to write about. Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.): a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their school: Students will receive feedback from others that read their writing pieces on KidPub. b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Students will write an opinion piece about their favorite geographical region in Georgia. Students will collect information from given resources and form their own opinion about these geographical regions. c. Higher-order thinking: Students will compare reasoning for their choice of geographical region.
1 d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students will post their writing pieces on KidPub.com for other students to view and comment on.

This learning activity would be considered a LoTi level 5 because it is student centered. Students are conducting their own research, forming their own opinions about the geographical regions of Georgia and creating their own writing pieces. Then the students are publishing their writing pieces on the internet for others to access. This type of activity is motivating for students because they know that their peers with be reading their work. How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your districts Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies? Students will only have access to websites that have been approved by the teacher. Students will not reveal any personal information about themselves or others. Teachers, parents and administrators will be informed of the activity before it begins. Teachers will monitor students at all times.
