Grade and Topic: Grade 2, Science Length of Lesson: 60 minutes

Mentor Teacher: Marla Phillips School: University of Memphis

Unit Objective
At the end of this unit, students will be able to identify several major components of the
Solar System such as the nine planets, charateristics of each planets, the phases of the
moon, objects within the Universe and so on. This unit will use technology to complete
assignments within different lessons to broaden their understanding and comprehension
of the use of technology to research different content areas.
Lesson Objective
Content Learning Goals and Objectives
1. Given a tablet and a worksheet on the planets, TLW list at least 5 characteristics on the
planets in groups with a 3 out of 4 on the rubric.

2. Given a Venn Diagram chart, in groups, TLW compare and contrast two given planets
and then record their answers using Audio Boom.

Student Participation

The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of the nine
planets and the characteristics of each. Students will complete a worksheet and a Venn
Diagram chart to represent their understanding of the planets.

Standards

State/District, Common Core Standards

GLE 0507.6.1 Compare planets based on their known characteristics.
0507.6.1 Develop a chart that communicates the major characteristics of each planet

ISTE Standard(s)

1. Creativity and Innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking,

construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using
technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
2. Communication and Collaboration: Students use digital media and
environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance to
support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others
.d. Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems
3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to
gather, evaluate, and use information.
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information
from a variety of sources and media

Materials
Materials Used
1. 20 worksheet on the planets
2. 4 tablets
3. 4 Venn Diagram charts
4. Internet Access to:
a. Information on the planets: http://www.planetsforkids.org/index.html
b. The classroom Audio Boom account: https://audioboom.com
5. Pencil
6. Marker

Technology Integration
Students will use the websites stated above to complete their in class assignments. The
groups will use the planet information site to access information on the nine planets. Upon
completion, students will turn their worksheets in to be graded and their Venn
Diagram/recordings will count towards their participation points.

Background and Rationale

Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of each
planet and its characteristics by completing a worksheet and a Venn
Diagram on the planets.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is the opening lesson of TN Science Unit 6 for 5 th
grade.
We will use the information presented in this lesson to
continue to build on knowledge of the planets and to have information
to complete a project at the end of the unit on Solar Systems.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students
who did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment.
However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part
of this particular lesson.
Procedures and Timeline
Introduction (7 minutes)
Begin by asking students "What do you all know about the solar system? & "Who
can name any planets in our solar system?"
Then display a visual of the nine planets on a large screen display, overhead, or
whiteboard.
Provide some brief information on the planets, be mindful to not give students too
much information because they will be researching each planet to gather their own
information.
After the brief discussion, divide students into their pre-assigned groups and
designate each group to a work station in the classroom.
