a) Asphyxiation
b) Poisoning by carbon monoxide.
c) Burns due to hot pulverised fuel, hot gasses or explosion.
d) Being struck by raw coal falling into mill.
e) Release of stored energy in springs or jacking systems.
Whenever possible all coal should be run off and the mill Purged.
All electrical supplies to the mill group must be Isolated and the Plant
Isolated from the furnace, air, gas, fuel supplies and fixed fire extinguisher
systems by dampers or blanks.
Before opening the mill system it should be cooled and a check made
(where reasonably practical) for the presence of fire.

If the mill cannot be emptied of coal, then a check for hot spots or
concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) in the mixture should be made with
the minimum of disturbance of the fuel.
b) The boiler operator and the person controlling the unit load must be
informed.
c) Notices must be affixed to the control panel to the effect that such
work is in progress.
