(Part 28) LIGHTING OF INDIAN GIRL MONUMENT: Originally written by Patricia Johnston High on a hillside overlooking the Village of Owego and the Susquehanna River a marble shaft pierces the quiet woods-like scene. This monument is a tribute to two cultures anda reminder of two eras of community involvement, In 1852, musical concerts were given in Owego by members of a full-blooded Mohawk family from Ontario, Canada. The Loft trio, a brother and two sisters, used the proceeds of the concerts to educate and Christianize their people, The Lofts were well received, but shortly after leaving Owego, 21-year-old Sa-Sa-Na was killed ina train accident in Deposit, NY. Her brother was persuaded to return her body to Owego for burial. The women of the Owego area started a fund that resulted ina monument being erected in the village cemetery in 1855. As their contribution to, and in conjunction with the Qwego Bicentennial Commission, Tioga American Legion May 2017 Ausiliary coordinated a project to permanently light this historic monument, The cooperation of the Village officials ~ Thoga Electric Supply, the Owego Volunteer Fire Department, Patterson Electric, members of the Owego Federated Garden Club, and many athers — was necessary for the success of this endeavor. Extensive research located Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte who were invited to participate in the lighting ceremony on June 26, 1987. Mr. and Mrs, Kenneth, Brant were guests of the American Legion Auxiliary for the Bicentennial Birthday Party weekend and were as warmly welcomed as their predecessors, the Lofts. The American Legion Auxiliary hosted a reception at the American Legion Home at 263 Front Street, Owego, NY in honor of the Brants and all who aided in this project. Also attending were members of the Bicentennial Commission and the Tioga County Historical Society. Mr. Brant presented the Mahawk Reserve flag to the Historical Society, The Brants were recipients of many aifts from the community. The Auxiliary was presented a portrait of the Loft family by a local citizens’ group. It is a copy of the only known existing likeness of the Indian trio taken at the time of their Owego performance. The Bicentennial events were video-taped and presented to the Historical Society and Indian guests for preservation and information. The Auxiliary members ‘were proud to have contributed to an enduring memory of their community's bicentennial. It is also gratifying ta have rekindled the friendship between the Indian and American cultures. We feel this is a continuation of the community spirit begun many years ago by the women of Owego. Bult soon after a fire destroyed the original building in 1889, it had office space in the front, assembly hall in the back, and meeting rooms on the second floor. Standing in front of the building looking across the street, old timers in their mind's eye can see the railroad station where Tioga State Bank is now located. Passengers could board the train there for trips to Ithaca or Owego while goods and livestock were placed in boxcars for shipment to the market. Directly across the street, the building recently occupied by a law firm was the Fountain Inn Restaurant, a popular eating place in the 30's and 40's, Next to that the building housing a beauty parlor was once @ radio repair shop... in the days before television. The next building was Kilpatrick's Store and Soda Fountain, a very popular hangout for schoo! kids. Standing next to it (now hausing an insurance office) was an A&P Grocery, later a drug store and next to that was Black's Hardware Store, destroyed by fire and is now 3 parking lot. There have been many changes in the makeup of Main Street as well as other areas of the village. But lef's concentrate on the building housing the Candor Market, because it is-0 history book in itself. As you walk into the building, you can almost hear the voices from the past when the post office was there, along with the office of the Town Clerk. The assembly hail in the back was often used for the entertainment of the public, including stage plays, musical programs, political meetings, movies, and even sports events, Stroling through the stare and letting your mind run free, you can almost hear the applause of the crowd for the performances during stage shows, the sounds of movie equipment projecting pictures anta the screen ar the cheering of the crowd during a basketball game, Maybe you can hear some politician expounding his promises and plans, just to get your vole. Thay have all been there and live on in the memories of those who were there during that era. Upstairs, where there is still a stage, probably for the use of the Masons Organization and the Odd Fellows Lodge, both having used it for meetings, or maybe used by a band playing for alocal dance, a popular form of entertainment during that time period. There is even a mysterious door with a small opening or peep hole, possibly for observing those who wished to enter, to be sure they were members of the group and entitled to admittance, or maybe for some sinister kong May 2017 forgotten purpose, For some unknown reason, there was. ‘second stairway to this room, discovered during recent remodeling, Its purpose and use is unknown. This, combined ‘with the peep hole in.a door, makes one wonder. This was ‘during the days af prohibition, Who knows what lurks in the past of both humans and buildings. Sometime around 1945, the building wes converted toa grocery stare by two local investors. Shortly thereafter, it was purchased by two brothers who operated it for several years, ‘eventually sailing if to John LaGeorge and new owned and ‘operated by Teresa Tware. Where once you could hear the cheers of the crowd, the awes and ahs of theater goers and the ‘thumping of a basketball, you can now pick up your week's ‘groceries. if you have never been to this fine grocery market, stop in and look around. Let your mind wander and listen for the memories. Cosmetologist Annie's Corner DON'T MISS THE FUN By Anne O. Stout Our day-to-day lives can bring on stress and challenges, but | recently read some advice ! thought | would share. .Don't let life's woes cover the fun stuff. Have you ever gone through your day so worried, concemed or just plain stressed that you miss something that might have given you a smile, caused you to laugh, or just relax a litle? If you don't know what I am talking about, i's a good sign you have. Humor helps us keep a lighter look at life - like the weather lately with up and dawn temperatures, snow and rain and more - gets-a bit frustrating, | left an office the othar day to go out and see snow falling and | sigh and pull my coat shut. | look up and spot a woman walking toward me wearing a winter coat and knit hal on top, yet shorls and flip flops on bottom, 1 grin to myself, thinking she is ready for whatever comes, On another day | pass a woman getting her jeans and t-shirt soaked in the rain as she walks her dog up the street, What made me grin was the dog had on a rain hat and coat, so he was staying dry. Ironic, eh? Halping at a library used book sale, I watch a woman excitedly purchase six books. She retums an hour later to see if she can swap for some others as she had bought the very sama books she had donated to the sala. We both had a good laugh and she got some other books, but we talked about the busyness of our lives and not taking tima to pay more attention, Recently while shopping, | spotted a young lady whose cell phone was playing, actually dancing in the aisle to the song before answering. Another time at the grocery store, the woman in front of me was unloading her groceries onto the counter when she May 2017 “THE MOONLIGHTER realized she had about 20 boxes af a children’s snack cracker. She looks at her litle daughter who gives her a big grin. The Clerk patiently waits, and the mother grins back and tells her to 90 on and put them in the bag, which makes: the litte girl smile: even bigger. These small, slightly funny moments, can cheer you up and may even stay with you longer if you let them. The trick is nt to be so engrossed in your own challenges and stress that you miss these moments. Pay attention to the world around you, natice people, look up from your phone if you are ane of those who is always engrossed in i. tronic how the cell phone is supposed to have improved communication, yet authorities are afraid we are losing the: ability to talk to and face each other. I's kind of shocking when you fead about people actualy so involved with their phones they have stepped out in traffic. Look up, look around, see who is around you; notice things: that are ing and try to smile more, retax more, and enjoy life. | laughed about something the other day and a total stranger stepped up to me and told me my laugh was contagious; she meant that as a compliment. Made me feel good, especially since | was laughing at something clumsy | had done. a Waiting From My Rocker By Hazel Goodrich We are home...1,282 miles! | didn't think we would ever try that trip-again but family happenings demand getting out of comfort zones at limes. We ware ready to retum. Georgia is 3 beautiful state with sun nearly every day and filled with the charm and culture only the deep south can offer. The flowers and lakes are breathtaking and the people are 80 hospitable; however, it is not New York. We have been homesick almost to a physical degree these past few months, so here we are again, Wedon’ fly snd we didn’t have a lot of “shut? to bring back (we thought), so with the help of some really good fends and their truck, it was a one-shot deal. | wil once more be digging in good old Yankee dirt, planting goad old Yankee veggies and flowers a The traffic was pretty bad and we saw a couple of really serious accidents but God is so good to us, we were never in danger, tha roads were dry and the sun shone all day nearly every day. People think we are crazy for moving back, but that old saying, “You can take the girl out of New York, but you can’t lake New York out af the gir’ is so true! See you in the plant section! God bless! THE BLOODIEST BATTLE OF ALL" SS ‘Sugar Loaf Hill was 4 small, insignificant-looking mound, barely ‘50/foet high and about 300 yards Jong, situated on the southam end of Ohinawa. It was part of a triangle ‘of strongpoints set up by the Japanese defenders designed to delay and demage the attacking American forces. The struggle for Sugar Loaf lasted 10 days; it was fought under the worst possible conditions -.a driving rain that never seemed fo slacken, day or night. Newsweek called Sugar Loaf ‘the mos! critica! Jocal battie of the war." Time described a company of Marines - 270 men - aesauitting the hill, They failed: fewer than 30 returned. Fletcher Pratt. the miltary historian, wrote that the battle was unmatched in the Pacific war for “closeness and desperation.” Casualties were almost unbelievable: In the 22nd and 29th Marine regiments, two out of every three men fell. The struggle forthe dominance of Sugar Loaf was probably the costliest engagement in the history af the Marine Corps. But by early evening on May 18, as night thickened over the embattled armies, the 29th Marines: had taken Sugar Loaf, this time for keeps. When Sugar Loaf was finally secured on May 18, it had cost 2,600 Marine and about 2,500 Japanese dead. SUGAR LOAF HILL (Part 11) The Killing Ground on Okinawa, Japan (1945) [Printed with permission from the author, who wishes to remain anonymous) Further down the form, again with shadows, | could see creases appearing to form the likeness of a gown. The form, or image, was not full length to me because of the position | was laying in; | had to look up from the ditch below. It stayed brilliant for some time and made no movement. | had watched it form, develop and remain in a statue-like position. At times it did appear to decrease and expand as if breathing in and out. It had no facial features, only a darkness where a face could have been. It finally began to decrease in size. Starting from the sides then from the bottom up and top down until | began seeing the outline of the tree trunk. (Note: | know from time to time my mind had been playing tricks on me. What | had seen could have come from stress, imagination, or | could have been hallucinating. But what | saw was very real and something | will never forget.) | was still staring at the trunk when suddenly I thought felt something moving on my stomach. My first thought was that the man laying across me was moving his fingers to let me know he was. “alive.” May 2017 Whispering, | asked..."Are you alive?” He didn't answer. Working my fingers to his side ! began poking him and again asked if he was alive. No answer. He had to be alive! felt him movel | began thinking he had been playing dead and now he was moving to let me know he was OK. | Waited for a few minutes then came to my senses and knew he was dead. | whispered down to Lt. Greene, “How you doing?” No answer. | nodded off again and began dreaming of water. | wanted water, a sip, a taste, anything wet! Then | wanted to move some part of me. Very slowly I began sliding my left hand off my chest and down to the ground. | cupped a hand full of dirt and squeezed it. Then | rubbed the flat of my hand slowly around In the dirt when I felt something cool; it was a spent cartridge casing. Possibly from the machine gun that had been firing fram over my head. | cupped the shell in my fist for a moment, then letit go. As! was bringing my hand back to my chest, ‘heard faint music followed by a vibrating hum. Whispering to noone in particular, | asked, "Who's playing music?” “It’s me (Lt. Greene)...it’s my Jew's harp,” He was: plunking 3 Jew’s harp softly. tasked him to stop, but he plunked on for a few moments, then stopped. Again, nothing happened. At that moment the man on my right began moaning and mumbling samething. They were bath active for a few minutes and finally quieted down, After having the sun in my face all afternoan, | could see it was beginning to go behind me. | thought it to be around 4:00. I started thinking of what | could do after it got dark, Physically, | know | couldn't walk er run, | was stiff, weak, thirsty and scared. | was wandering if there would be another attempt to reach us when all hell suddenly broke lose. Lounsbury Note to Readers: This is the first part of a six-part series encompassing the adventures of the three amigos while on vacation in Europe in June 1968, The three amigos were myself, my wife Esther, and our cousin Sharan Lounsbury who was and still remains our “best friend.” Sadly, Sharon passed sway in July 2002 due to cancer. We A VISIT TO ROME it was in June 1968 when my wife, Esther, and cousin, Sharon Lounsbury, and | began a hree-week vacation in Europe. Our goal was to visit many italian cities and other points of interest in Germany, Austria, France, Monaco, Nice, Switzerland and other places that are not readily recalled (senior moment). We packed our luggage and ourselves into a seven-year-old Volkswagen Beetle. You can imagine the extreme claseness elt in that.car, It coughed and sputtered all over Europe, but we made it! We arrived in Rome and decided to spend at least three days. There was so much to see and do. Wisits were made ta the Coliseum and Trevi Fountain and other points of interest that escape my mind. All of our visits were done by walking and we {id lots of that. Trevi Fountain inspired the hit song, "Three Coins in the Fountain,” and it was in a scene from a 1950's mavie, "Roman Holiday.” The Coliseum is awesome. One can imagine the gladiator battles fought to the death, the chariot races and the lions searching the endless mazes for food (slaves), etc. May 2077 We spent our evenings doing what most Romans enjoy doing after they have supped ~ strolling the streets. It was loads of fun, very entertaining, and we would stop to get a bite to eat at the outdoor cates. It was on the third day that we decided to stroll through Vatican City, St. Peter's Square, and into the cathedral. There's so much to see. Upon our arrival at St. Peter's Basilica, Sharon and Esther were politely informed that they must caver their heads before being allowed to enter. Fumbling through their handbags, they were able to find a handkerchief for each of them. The handkerchiefs were acceptable head coverings. The walk into the church was breathtaking. We were in awe of the Sistine Chapel and the many, many paintings by Michelangelo. It was AWESOME and we were amazed by how one man could paint such beauty that was s0 easy an the eyes. All of it dane or the ceiling of the church. Truly AMAZING! We did get «a bit of stiff neck walking around and looking at the paintings above us. The stiffness was worth it. We didn’t get to have an audience with the Pape (forgot to make an appointment), It was Pope Paul Vi. So we went to the Catacombs. The Catacombs is in the basement of the church and is where all former Pones are buried, Didn't see any skulls, but their papal attire was there. Each Pope's tomb was open for all to see —kind of eerie. ‘The inside of St. Peter's is HUGE! I'm not sure that you could walk it all in one day. Vatican City, which encompasses St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica, isa most impressive sight to visit, Just strolling around and looking at everything was most interesting and intellectually stimulating. We would without hesitation, if possible, return to Rome again. There is $o much more to see and do and we just didn’t have the time with more places to visit in Italy, France, Germany and Austria. “The Three Amiges - Reger, Esther and Sharon Never Give Up — Inspirational Stories Charles Schultz had every cartoon he submitted rejected by his high school yearbook staff.
