Welcome to WipAD
Airspans WipAD program automatically downloads new software versions to
ASWipLL devices on a cyclic basis. Initially, you need only define downloading
parameters, and from then onward, WipAD automatically downloads new software
vesrions to devices. Thus, WipAD assures that all ASWipLL devices in the network
contain the latest software version.
WipAD routinely checks the devices software version. If the devices software
version is different from the version defined in WipADs download settings,
WipAD automatically downloads the version to the device, transfers the software
from the devices Standby to Active software bank, and then locks the Active bank.
WipAD also allows you to perform simultaneous downloads to multiple ASWipLL
devices using WipAD loaders.
WipAD provides you with real-time statistical reports of various download
parameters. This information is displayed in table and graph format.

Purpose of this Guide

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for using WipAD. This includes
instructions for defining download parameters, downloading software versions, and
viewing reports and statistical information regarding the download processes.

Targeted Audience
This guide is intended for the person who is responsible for managing the ASWipLL
system and downloading software versions to the ASWipLL devices.

Overview
This chapter provides an overview of WipADs mechanism for downloading
software (SW) versions to ASWipLL devices.

1.1. Software Banks

ASWipLL devices contain two SW banks: Active and Standby. The Active bank
contains the current SW version that is running on the device; the Standby bank
contains an inactive SW version.
When WipAD downloads new SW versions to ASWipLL devices, it first downloads
it to the devices Standby bank. Afterward, it transfers (i.e. swaps) the SW from the
Standby bank to the Active bank, and then locks the Active bank (as displyed in the
figure below).

Figure 1-1: Devices (e.g., SPR) software banks

04050311-04 Airspan Networks Inc. 1-1

O ve r v i e w W i p AD U s e r ' s G u i d e

1.2. General Download Process

WipAD can download SW versions to single or multiple ASWipLL devices. Figure
1-2 illustrates WipADs general downloading process for downloading SW versions
to ASWipLL devices (i.e., BSRs, BSDUs, and SPRs/IDRs).

Figure 1-2: WipADs General Download Process (e.g., for SPRs)

The general WipAD downloading process is as follows:

1. WipAD receives a list of ASWipLL devices for SW version download. This list
is either from a database or a text file (according to user-defined download
parameters, discussed in Chapter 4, Downloading Software Versions).
2. WipAD checks the devices current SW version (in the devices Active bank).
The communication between WipAD and the device is typically performed via a
TFTP server (user-defined).

1-2 Airspan Networks Inc. 04050311-04

W i p AD U s e r ' s G u i d e O ve r v i e w

3. WipAD decides to download the new SW version (desired version) only if

certain user-defined download parameters are met. For example, WipAD
downloads the new SW version if one or both of the following download
parameters are met:
! The devices SW version (in the Active bank) is different to the desired
version, (which you want to download).
! The device contains a specific SW version (From Version). In other words,
only if the device contains the specific version, will WipAD replace it with
the desired SW version.
4. WipAD downloads the SW version file (user-defined) via the TFTP server (user-
defined) to the devices Standby bank. From the Standby bank, WipAD swaps
the new SW version to the Active bank, and then performs a lock so that the
Active bank does not receive additional SW versions from the Standby bank.
5. If the desired version already exists in the devices Standby bank, then instead of
downloading the desired version, WipAD simply swaps and locks the SW
version from the Standby bank to the Active bank.
For multiple downloads, WipAD uses loaders to download SW to devices. Each
WipAD loader is assigned a device. Once the loader completes the software
download to a device, the loader receives another device (from the list of devices)
for which to download a SW version.
WipADs download process is cyclic: WipAD continually checks devices SW
versions, and if applicable, downloads SW versions to the ASWipLL devices. Each
download cycle (called a loop) occurs during a user-defined interval (loop interval).
During this interval, WipAD loaders download, or attempt to download, the desired
SW version to the devices (from the list received from a text file or database).

04050311-04 Airspan Networks Inc. 1-3

O ve r v i e w W i p AD U s e r ' s G u i d e

If WipAD loaders are available (i.e., completed downloading to devices and there
are no more devices to download), then the loaders remain dormant until the loop
interval ends. After the loop interval ends, a new loop starts (with the same loop
interval time), and the following occurs:
! WipAD loaders that did not complete downloading to a device in the previous
loop, resume downloading to the concerned device in this next loop.
! WipAD loaders that completed downloading to their assigned devices are once
again assigned devices from the same list of devices. The devices are again
checked whether they contain the desired SW version. If the devices do not
contain the desired version, WipAD loaders download the desired SW version.
In this way, WipAD assures that ASWipLL devices in the network always contain
the latest (or desired) SW version.

4.1. Defining Download Parameters

Before you can download software versions to ASWipLL devices, you need to
define download parameters. Download parameters include, for example, the device
type (BSR or SPR/IDR) to which you want to download, TFTP server, files to
download, versions that the device should have, method for selecting the devices,
and number of simultaneous downloads.
The SW version files are conveniently named to allow easy identification for
selecting the correct file for downloading to the relevant ASWipLL device. The
table below lists the SW version file names for each ASWipLL device.
ASWipLL device SW version file
((BIN format)
BSR BSR.bin
PPR PPR.bin
SPR SPR.bin
IDR IDR.bin
BSDU BSDU.bin

In addition, WipAD allows you to choose from a list of methods for selecting
ASWipLL devices to which you want to download versions. WipAD can receive
device IP (or MAC) addresses from databases or text files.
To define download parameters:

1. On the toolbar, click the Start Download button.

The Download Parameters dialog box appears, as displayed in Figure 4-1.

you want downloaded from the TFTP server
5. If in Step 3, you selected the BSRs option, in the BSR File Name field, enter the
BSR file name that you want downloaded from the TFTP server.
6. In the Desired Version field, enter the software version number (for example,
2.8.58.1) that the device should have when the download process is complete.
Before downloading, WipAD checks whether the device has this version.
WipAD downloads the version only if the device does not have the desired
version.
7. In the From Version field, enter the software version for which you want to
replace with the downloaded new version. In other words, devices with a
different version from this entered version, will not be downloaded a new
version. If this field is left empty, WipAD will download the new version
regardless of the devices current version.
8. To verify that the files are of the desired version (entered in the Desired Version
field), click the Verify Version button. WipAD sends an SNMP request to the
TFTP server to partly download the entered file names (see Step 4). When a
reply occurs, WipAD verifies that the version number of these partially
downloaded files is identical to the value entered in the Desired Version field
(see Step 6). If these files contain the Desired Version number, then an
Information message box appears confirming this, as displayed in Figure 4-2. If
the files do not contain the desired versions, then an Information message box
appears indicating this, as displayed in Figure 4-3.

9. In the Select Devices From group, select one of the following options from
where you want to select ASWipLL devices to which you want to download a
software version:
! From databases:
DB MAC Addresses: The SPR/IDR devices are selected from the
Devices table in the ASWipLL database, where the column EthMacAddr
is not empty. (Only for SPRs/IDRs.)
DB IP Address: The BSRs are selected from the Devices table in the

! From text files:

Text File MAC Addresses: Enter the path of the location of the text file
that contains MAC addresses, by clicking the Browse button. If the path
entered is not valid, then an error message appears when the Run button
is clicked. Each line in this text file must contain a MAC address.
WipAD searches the Devices table for the MAC address that was listed
in the text file. Once it finds the MAC address, it is assigned the
corresponding IP address. If WipAD can not locate a MAC address, then
it searches the next MAC address.
Each loader verifies that the MAC address from the text file equals the
MAC address that was received from the device. If these addresses are
different, then it wont start the download, and will place the result in
Failed events. (Only for SPRs/IDRs.)
An example of a text file with MAC addresses is displayed below.

Text File IP Addresses: Enter a path for the location of the text file that
contains device IP addresses. If the path entered is not valid, then an error
message appears when the Run button is clicked. Each line in this text
file must contain a valid IP address. It may also contain SNMP
community strings (read community and write community). The default
values for the community strings are public and private (if none is
available).

accesses these BSRs and retrieves their SPRs/IDRs IP addresses.

Note: You can access the text file by double-clicking the file name in the Path
field.

10. In the Number of Simultaneous Downloads field, enter the number of

simultaneous downloads. Each loader is assigned a unique IP address (device).
The maximum number of simultaneous downloads is 50.

Note: The TFTP server can stop responding if the number of simultaneous
downloads approaches 50 (i.e., this depends on your TFTP server).

11. In the Loop Intervals field, enter the time interval (in hh:mm:ss format) for
when a loader remains dormant after it completes all its assigned downloads and
until the loader receives new download assignments (counter = 0).
12. Select one of the following download options:
! Download and Swap: WipAD downloads the software to the devices
Standby bank, and then swaps it to the devices Active bank.
! Download without Swapping: The software is downloaded only to the
devices Standby bank.

version in the ASWipLL database (i.e., no download is performed). This
version appears in the Devices Versions Table, and depending on the
deviceBSR or SPR/IDRappears in the BSR Versions Table or SPR/IDR
Versions Table, respectively.
! Download Only if Desired Version: WipAD checks the software
versions of the devices in the ASWipLL database. If the version is different
from the desired version (defined in the Desired Version field, in Step 6),
then WipAD downloads the new software version to the device.
13. To select a log type for the download, click the Advanced button, and then
select one of the following log options from the Advanced Log group:
! Log per MAC Address: A log is generated according to the MAC address
of the device; each device receives a separate log.
! Log per Loader: A log is generated per loader according to the loaders
number. The log name includes the starting date of the process and the
loaders index, for example, Dec_19_PollerArr1.log
! Do not Log: No log is generated.

Viewing Download Events W i p AD U s e r ' s G u i d e

When a loader completes a software download process for a device, the loader
requests a new download process for another device. If the loader receives a new
request to download software to a device (defined by an IP address), the loader
downloads the software to the new device, and the Current Downloads table is
updated with the new devices download progress.
If the loader does not receive any requests to download software to a device, the
loader remains dormant for a user-defined interval, called the Loop Interval. The
Loop Interval is defined in the Download Parameters dialog box (see Chapter 4,
Downloading Software Versions). The Loop Interval counter is displayed on the
status bar.

Figure 5-3: Loop Interval Counter Displayed on the Status Bar

Once the Loop Interval counter reaches zero (0), the loader is a reassigned device for
software download.

5.4.2. Maximum Downloads for Unregistered WipAD

If you are running WipAD without a license, WipAD allows you to download to a
maximum of only 10 ASWipLL devices. If you attempt to download to more than
10, WipAD downloads to the first 10 devices; and for all the remaining devices, the
download fails, and Demo limit reached is displayed in the Failed Table pane. In
addition, for each attempt to download to a device above this maximum (i.e., 10),
the WipAD Unregistered message box appears, as displayed in Figure 5-6.

Figure 5-6: WipAD Unregistered message box

To continue downloading to additional devices, you need to quit WipAD, and then
start WipAD again. This is a time consuming process, especially when you need to
download software to many devices. Thus, to efficiently download to multiple
ASWipLL devices, Airspan recommends that you obtain a license for WipAD.

5.4.3. Deleting
WipAD allows you to delete all entries listed in the Failed table.
To delete all entries in the Failed table:
! From the Tools menu, choose Clear Failed Events Table.

Note: Before deleting all entries from the Failed table, ensure that the
