As they arrive, give each student a copy of the Leader Pack List of contradictions (item 16).
If you do not have the pack item, prepare the following list contradictions: Cruel mercy, recent
history, constant change, original copy, clearly confused, totally partial, almost exactly, real
fantasy, civil war, deafening silence, new antiques, genuine imitation, exact estimate, dark
light, small giant.
Direct students to form groups of two or three, examine the list and choose the three that
catch their attention the most. Explain that they will share their choices with the group. Allow
2 to 3 minutes for them to work. Ask: Which are three contradictions you chose and why?
Option: Contradictions
Before the class, write the following 6 sayings on index cards or strips of paper, one saying
per card. (Each saying has a corresponding contradictory one indicated by the number. Do not
include the numbers on the cards. The numbers are for your reference.)
1. Look before you leap.
1a. He who hesitates is lost.
2. If at first you dont succeed, try, try again.
2a. Dont beat your head against a stone wall.
3. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
3a. Out of sight, out of mind.
As students arrive, distribute the 6 cards at random. Students will form groups around the
ones with the card. Say: Each saying has a contradictory one and you must find it. Allow them
to mix in order to match the sayings. When they finish, each group will read the two sayings.
