SLIDE 5: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
The theory of Habit Formation by Wendy Wood and Dennis Runger states that learning to speak
well is like learning any other significant skill. If one wants to either be fluent or proficient in
English he must begin with the desire to learn. He must be determined and focused on what he
wants. And with that, if he wants to learn, he must practice and practice to be effective and
successful.
The theory of Communicative Competence and Profile by Hymes Dell states that a normal
person acquires knowledge of sentences not only as grammatical structures but also of what is
appropriate. Meaning, a person can know if a statement is correct may it be the sentences
grammatical formation or on how the sentence is used. In addition to this, the communicative
competence of a person can be affected by their profile for example, the language or dialect
spoken or used at home, the reading materials commonly used, their activities outside work,
and the language or dialect used in normal conversations.
The theory on Functional Communicative Activities by William Letterwood anchors this study.
Through sharing opinions, ideas, thoughts and feelings and communicating with others, ones
speaking skills are developed and improved making him more proficient in speaking English.
SLIDE 6: PARADIGM
Independent Variables:
(Socio-Demographic Profile):
1. Age
2. Gender
3. Civil status
4. Educational attainment
Dependent Variables:
The independent variables may affect the dependent variable of the study. Meaning, the age,
the gender, the civil status, and the educational attainment of the respondents can affect the
level of their basic English speaking skills.
METHODOLOGY
The study is a descriptive type of research since it aims to find out the levels of basic English
speaking skills of the workers in the selected business establishments in Catarman, Northern
Samar. Also, the study utilizes this type of research because it compares the two variables of
the study if the two variables have a significant relationship or not. This study employs the
survey method as it uses a questionnaire that is composed of open and close ended questions.
SLIDE 8: POPULATION AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
The researchers first gathered the numbers of workers in the three categories, a total of 98
respondents. With the huge number of population, the researchers decided to set a quota for
the respondents, and come up with 30 samples in the population.
The instrument that will be used in gathering the data for the research study is the two-part
instrument. It contains the questions related to the demographic profile of the respondents such
as the age, gender, civil status and the educational attainment. The second part of the research
instrument contains the oral test, with ten (10) questions formulated by the researchers. With
the help of an English expert the questionnaire were revised and improved.
In gathering the data for the study, the researchers will first use the percentage formula. The
percentage formula will quantify the demographic profile of the respondents. Another formula
that will be used for this study is the weighted mean formula. This formula will measure the
speaking skills of the respondents. And to test the null hypothesis of the two variables of the
study, the researchers will use the multi-regression analysis.
