Genre Analysis

Children are rapidly being affected by the media.New technology integration to society

has created obvious changes in the development of kids. These facts are proven and shown

through numerous sources. A diversity of genres allows the information to be shared in different

distribution, format, and amount of information methods.

The analyzation of How is media affecting kids? an infographic and Impact of media use

in children and youth, a typography will show how both of these genres convey their

message. We will use both of these sources to identify whether there really is an effect regarding

the media on the children. How do they both compare, what do they agree on ,and what stands

out in their information will be some of the main topics discussed. How both of these sources

present their information will determine efficiency in different aspects. The audience and purpose

of both sources might have a few differences ,but it is the structure that will have the most.

The first source which is How is media affecting kids?, is a graphic animated picture by

Early Childhood Education Degrees, developed by NOWSOURCING. This image contains

contains four sections which are exposure of media to children, parental concerns, the teachers

perspective, and positive versus negative effects. These issues all regard the subject of media

usage with children. They are color coordinated by orange, grey, and green. These allows for an

easy distinction between the sections. There is five charts, seven pie charts, and six distinctive

images. The big percentages easily draw in the viewers attention to read the descriptions.

The second source, Impact of media use in children and youth, is an online article created

by Paediatr Child Health. This article is divided in different subsections. It requires more reading
MEDIA AND CHILDREN 3

than source one. There is seven sections in total. The first one, television, in particular contains six

areas that include learning, violence, nutrition, sexuality, alcohol, smoking, advertising,

education ,and parental involvement . This article goes over information that source one did not

have space for. Due to the format difference source two is able to accommodate more

information and explanations that in contrast source one had to cram to very simple descriptions.

The first source states at the bottom of the image that,Early-Childhood-Education-

Degrees.com has taken a look at the effect of media and technology on children 8 and under in

the U.S ,and this is our findings(Early Childhood Education Degrees,2013).Their purpose is

share the information they went ahead and researched. The way this source uses ethos is by

appealing to the parents of children 8 and under in the US.Pathos is brought up by including a

parental concerns section that states parents say they would like to limit their childrens TV

watching, allowing the parents to connect to other parents on the same views. The image appeals

largely to logos since it has percentages all throughout the sections, depicting an estimate on the

selected concerns.

Objective of the second source is to explore the beneficial and harmful effects of media

on children's mental and physical health, and to identify how physicians can counsel patients and

their families and promote the healthy use of the media in their communities(Impact of media

use on children and youth). They state their purpose at the very beginning of the article, making it

clear what will be overviewed. A different approach is taken regarding the tone ethos, pathos ,and

logos is made, the article has a formal tone. Ethos is shown by the fact that the article is giving

tips to child physicians working with these problems, for example,[p]hysicians who see a child

with a history of aggressive behavior should inquire about the childs exposure to violence
MEDIA AND CHILDREN 4

portrayed on television.Pathos is constant throughout by giving encouragement towards things

they can go ahead and do to help their children, [f]amilies should be encouraged to explore

media together and discuss their educational value. Logos makes an appearance by giving

percentages of amounts, [t]he average child sees 12,000 violent acts on television annually.

Learning is affected by media according to recent studies. In the first genre, under The

teacherss Perspective section in the infographic, uses percentages to show the views of media

inside the classroom by teachers. According to these numbers there are high areas hurt by media

usage according to teachers( Early Childhood Education Degrees,2013).Similarly genre number

two mentions that unsupervised television viewing by school-aged children has a significant

deleterious effect on academic performance, especially reading(as cited in Does television affect

learning and school performance,1986,n.p. and Child Dev,1988,n.p.). Although both of these

genres use a different style, the same message is conveyed across which is the fact that media

affects children in bad and good ways depending on how it is applied regarding learning.

For example, data showing the negative effects of exposure to violence, inappropriate sexuality

and offensive language (as cited in Committee on Public Education,2001,n.p).

Although both give facts, they differentiate in the way the apply them regarding their

genre. The format of source one is less formal and is more technical regarding the way the

information is placed out.Any of these genres can benefit their users, it just depends on how

much the reader is willing to obtain. In case of source one, it works perfect for all audiences

children and adults. While source two, due to its more complex structure, is directed mainly
MEDIA AND CHILDREN 4

towards adults and related work study areas to children development. Overall they are both great

sources they just serve different purposes with the same theme.
