Thank You!
Orbx would like to thank you for purchasing FTX US WA56 Israel's Farm at Sedro Woolley (WA56).

Welcome to real grass airstrips! Located fifteen miles west of 3W5 Concrete Muni, WA56 Israel's Farm is a
truly delightful destination for the low and slow flyer. This is a private airstrip located on a working farm set in
a beautiful valley. The farm and airstrip ooze atmosphere and character and you will be challenged by the
landing, where you'll need skim trees, avoid clipping the fence and then come to a stop before you run out of
grass.

For the first time in FSX you will be literally surrounded by a sea of long grass, wildflowers, farm machinery
and a reproduction of the location in such detail it's hard to distinguish from original photos. Featuring FTX
Aero, tunable scenery complexity via a control panel, an ambient soundscape, a bonus second private airstrip
immediately south, and nearly 30 square kilometres of 60cm and 15cm photoreal including a riverscape, this
scenery will be the mecca for short field flyers everywhere!

This scenery is primarily a collaboration between John Venema and Tim Harris, who took time off their normal
Orbx duties to create this scenery, with many contributions from other members of the team.

The Photo Shoot Story

We sent Philip Wilson from the Orbx team to take the photos of WA56 once we decided on the location. It's a
bonus that Philip literally lives ten minutes drive away. We gave Phil what we thought was the private airfield
telephone number and sent him on the mission. Phil came back with superb photos, and writes:

"Since the phone number listed on every government website was a fax number I couldn't call him. When I
arrived at his property the gate was locked and there was a for sale sign at the entrance.

I called the real estate agent who gave me his home and cell phone numbers. When I called his cell, he
answered and when I began to tell him why I was there, he told me to hold on as he was right across the
street at his other property. He actually owns 40 acres covering both sides of the street.

When Marlin walked up and shook my hand he had the warmest smile on his face and was sincerely happy to
see me. We talked for awhile and he restores aircraft in the barn across the street.

He owns the hangar directly across from the Bolan hangar at Concrete and knows everyone at that airport.
We got to talking about some of the guys at Concrete and by the end he opened the gate and told me to
take what pictures I needed. He had another call come in and had to go but I did get the pictures.

The guy who owns the other private airstrip and chicken farm immediately south of WA56 (also featured in
the scenery) has "No Trespassing" signs up everywhere."

Using BOB

Be sure to download Orbx's freeware "BOB" utility, which is a unique way to walk around the farm and go
exploring. What I did for my walks around WA56 is disable all the urban sounds which BOB uses, so that only
footsteps can be heard. I'll make a post on the forums on how to do that simple tweak.

Orbx FTX Pacific Northwest is required for full functionality
This airport scenery addon is designed to work with Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Orbx FTX Pacific
Northwest (FTX PNW). It will work fine without FTX PNW but please note the limitations below.

Here's what is required to run this airport scenery as Orbx designed it to:

PRODUCT Version(s) Why

Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) The base product required.

All Orbx products are made for

Standard Edition
FSX and don't run by
Deluxe Edition
themselves.
Acceleration Addon Pack (not a stand-alone product)
Gold Edition (which includes all three versions above)

If you don't have FSX already, the best version to

purchase would be the Gold Edition, which already
includes all versions and service packs SP1 and SP2.

Orbx FTX Pacific Northwest (Download) The FTX region covering the
airport location
This is a downloadable FTX region pack which you can
purchase from the Orbx fullterrain.com website. It's
designed to work specifically with FSX

Orbx FTX Pacific Northwest (DVD) (Optional)

An alternative way to purchase

For convenient installation, the Orbx FTX USA Canada
FTX PNW on a handy quick to
Pacific Northwest region is also available as a DVD.
install DVD covering the Pacific
Northwest region
This offers a quick and easy installation of the entire FTX
Pacific Northwest region in which WA56 is located.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS OUT ON IF YOU DON'T HAVE ORBX FTX INSTALLED?

- Blending of the airport photoreal into the surrounding terrain with exactly matching ground textures

Quick Installation Guide
Whether you are installing Orbx WA56 Concrete from the downloaded FlightSimStore wrapper installer or the
DVD purchased from an Orbx Reseller, the procedure is very similar.

DOWNLOADED FSS WRAPPER EDITION

STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1 Unzip the FlightSimStore.com (FSS) downloaded ZIP file. You should end up with the FSS
installer application OrbxFTXWA56100.exe

2 Run OrbxFTXWA56100.exe

3 Fill in the Order Number, Date and Key when requested. This information would have been
emailed to you when you purchased the download version of WA56 from FSS.

4 The wrapper will unwrap the Orbx installer which will then run and present the opening
installation screen. Please acknowledge the EULA page and continue. You cannot choose a
destination folder, since all Orbx products are installed into the ORBX folder in the FSX folder

5 Once the Orbx installer has completed, start FSX and choose WA56 as your starting location

ORBX RESELLER DVD EDITION

STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1 Insert the WA56 DVD into your computer's DVD drive. If you have autorun enabled, the
installer will start automatically, or prompt you to run Setup_WA56.exe
If you don't have autorun enabled, please use Windows Explorer to open the DVD contents
then run the Setup_WA56.exe application

2 The Orbx installer which will then run and present the opening installation screen. Please
acknowledge the EULA page and continue. You cannot choose a destination folder, since all
Orbx products are installed into the ORBX folder in the FSX folder

3 Once the Orbx installer has completed, start FSX and choose WA56 as your starting location

Manual Scenery Library Configuration
If you do NOT have Orbx FTX installed you can still use this scenery by manually adding the scenery library
entry from within Flight Simulator X.

Here's the steps required to configure the scenery library.

1. Run Flight Simulator X, then selecting Settings | Scenery Library

2. Click on the Add Area button

3. A folder browser window will pop up.

4. Navigate to the ORBX \ FTX_NA folder

5. Now select the FTXAA_WA56 folder and click OK

6. You will then see two folders displayed, Scenery and Texture. Now click OK*

*(Note: If you're using Windows 7, click anywhere in the white portion of the folder browser screen that shows
the Scenery and Texture folder, not the OK button - there's a bug with FSX under Windows 7)

7. You will now be taken back to the Scenery Library list of scenery added, and the airport will now be
displayed at the top of the list.

You can now load up a flight at the airport using the "Free Flight" menu.

The FTX Aero Tool

When you first install the WA56 scenery, the installer will automatically add a Windows desktop shortcut to
FTX Aero for you. There is also a shortcut in the Start Menu under the Orbx program group. When you launch
the Aero tool, its interface looks similar to this:

Its very simple to use. FTX Aero replaces three global FSX textures when you apply the choices from its
interface. These are:

Detail Bump Map This is an overlay texture which is designed to add noise and remove
smoothness from ground textures. FSX comes with its own detail1.bmp file which is very generic and
does not really enhance airport ground environments. The FTX Aero version creates three different
styles of bump mapping for asphalt or concrete surfaces.
Runway 18 Texture Orbx GA airfields will generally have runway18.dds encoded in their APX files.
This is a runway used predominately at smaller airports. The FTX Aero version has much better detail
than the FSX default. You can choose from 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 resolution.

Orbx FTX WA56 Israel's Farm at Sedro Woolley Version 1.0 User Guide June 2010 Page 8
Taxiway Markings Again, Aero will provide two variants, the first being a yellow faded line suitable
for asphalt, the second being a yellow/black line suited to concrete.

Just make your choice and the texture appearance will be shown in the preview window. FTX Aero will
automatically make a backup of whatever textures you currently have installed. You can go back to your
default installed texture at any time by just selecting Your Default as the choice.

TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD Settings in fsx.CFG

FTX Aero is quite clever in that it will automatically set your TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD= (TML)parameter in fsx.CFG
for you to allow the higher resolution 2048x2048 runway18.dds to be properly seen. Additionally, if you prefer
to use a TML of 1024, 2048 or 4096 (for addons like REX or a HD aircraft repaint), simply select the TML menu
option where you can choose to lock your TML setting to one of those values.

Alternatively, you can also choose to have Aero revert back to a TML of 1024 whenever youre not using a
higher resolution texture. In this instance, FTX Aero is a handy tool to quickly set your TML level regardless.

If youve installed an Orbx airport and not chosen any Aero textures and do not have Land Detail Textures
enabled in the FSX settings menu, this is what the ground details look like:

Now enable Land Detail textures in the FSX settings menu, under the Scenery tab, as follows:

Orbx FTX WA56 Israel's Farm at Sedro Woolley Version 1.0 User Guide June 2010 Page 9
Here's a runway hold short point with the FSX scenery Land detail textures setting enabled

And finally a runway hold short point with FTX Aero Coarse bump map, 1024 runway and Yellow taxiway lines
selected and enabled. The difference in quality is quite visually stunning with Aero enabled.

One note about FTX Aero - even though it's included with WA56 Concrete, the features that Aero provides
are not used on the aprons and runways at WA56, since Andreas has created a custom gmax polygon surface.
However, the grass and other ground areas DO use the Aero bump mapping. The bonus is that Aero works on
all the other 450 airports provided as part of FTX Pacific Northwest!

Orbx FTX WA56 Israel's Farm at Sedro Woolley Version 1.0 User Guide June 2010 Page 10
The WA56 Control Panel
After WA56 Concrete is installed, a Control Panel icon is placed onto your Windows desktop. You can also use
FTX Central to access the WA56 Control Panel from the main FTX Central interface.

The Control Panel will enable you to disable or enable certain scenery features of the airport to allow it to
perform in accordance with the PC hardware you have. By default, all scenery options are enabled by the
installer. You can also disable the individual Audio Sound Pack sounds using the Control Panel.

To disable or enable any feature, simply select it from the list for a brief description of what it is. To disable an
item, simply click the tickbox. Any changes are made instantly and there is no Apply button required.

You may click on each items description in the list to see the explanation, and this does not trigger the on/off
switchbox. This will allow you to consider which items to disable.

Control Panel Settings for Long Grass and other options
This airfield introduces long grass, which looks great in the simulator while taxiing and provides a real sense of
'being there' - but it does come at a performance cost. If you are getting low frames at WA56 then use the
table below to determine what works best for your PC.

CP Setting FPS Impact Who should use it?

Grass Level 1 Low All PCs can use this setting.

Grass Level 2 Medium Mid-Range PCs can use this setting. Disable this during snow
on the ground in hard winter (January) to avoid seeing
patterns on the ground.

Grass Level 3 High Best suited to i7CPUs with GTX 200 or 400 series cards. Again,
you should disable the long grass when there is snow on the
ground to avoid seeing repeating patterns of grass, and
typically during hard winter the grass length is short.

Logs and dead trees Medium Mid to high end PCs recommended.

Animated birds Medium Mid to high end PC's recommended

Audio Low Usually there is little impact to FPS with audio enabled

Quick Reference FSX Settings
The table below lists in a handy reference the minimum recommended settings required in FSX to enjoy WA56
the way Orbx designed it. These settings run well on most PCs and take particular advantage of the custom
mesh and photoreal imagery used in the scenery area.

If you use the settings below you will enjoy a high fidelity experience and good performance.

Setting Value Why?

Level of detail radius Large Reduces blurring of textures

Global Texture Resolution Max Best displays photoreal textures

Mesh Complexity 100 Better terrain definition

Mesh Resolution 5m 5m is recommended for this airport scenery (same as 3W5)

Texture Resolution 7cm Sharpest roads and freeways

Scenery Complexity Very Dense How Orbx designed WA56

Autogen Density Very Dense Best FPS versus detail More discussion on this on page 17
regarding setting this slider according to your PC specs

Aircraft AI Traffic 16% Best balance

Road Vehicles 16% No need to set higher for WA56

Recommended FSX Slider Settings
Firstly, like default FSX, dragging all your sliders to the right even with todays modern hardware, will for most
people result in very poor visuals and performance. We suggest that you begin your exploration of WA56
using the slider settings shown below, and then if you find performance to be acceptable, you can move
certain sliders to the right, although we recommend you only move one slider at a time to gauge the effect.

The most critical slider in FSX is the Autogen Density slider. With the way WA56 has been designed, it has
the single most critical performance effect in the simulator. We'll discuss the best settings for this slider later.

So before you begin your first flight, please change your FSX sliders to what is shown on the following pages.
You may think the settings are too low at first, but we're calling these the WA56 BASE SETTINGS which is the
recommended settings for medium spec PCs.

Orbx FTX WA56 Israel's Farm at Sedro Woolley Version 1.0 User Guide June 2010 Page 14
* Please refer to the Autogen Density Table further in this user guide for specific information about this slider

The Autogen Density Slider
Because FTX uses much denser, more accurately placed autogen objects in its annotation, having it set to
Extemely Dense in large cities like Vancouver, Seattle or Portland will bring even the most powerful PC to its
knees. We won't mince our words - FTX is not designed to give you a 60FPS experience with all sliders maxed.

The key thing to remember is that WA56 is designed to be used both today and in the FUTURE, meaning that
we did not cripple the product on release to cater for a broad range of PCs, but rather created a standard
which will be enjoyed by most people as hardware catches up.

One thing about WA56 though, is that at maximum autogen settings it looks simply superb, so if you have an
Intel i7 CPU and a GTX 200 or 400 series card, crank it up to the max - it's worth it!

Here's a simple table which should be used as a guide for the Autogen Density slider. This has been indexed
to PCs as at January 2010, which means this table will become dated rather quickly. We expect the 'Extreme'
spec PC to be the Entry Level by mid 2012, so of course as FSX gets older, your PCs are likely to get faster.

That said, if you adhere to these slider settings in WA56 you will get a good balance between visuals and
performance.

PC Specifications (Circa Jan 2010) Seattle City / Urban Areas WA56 and Rural Areas

Entry Level
Core2 Duo <= 2.5Ghz | < 512MB GPU

Mid Range
Core2 Duo >= 2.8Ghz | 512MB+ GPU

High End
Intel i7 9xx < 4Ghz (not OC) | 1GB GPU

Extreme
Intel i7 9xx >= 4Ghz (OC) | 1-2GB GPU

General Tips For Flights
When in Virtual Cockpit, cockpit or external views, pull the zoom back using the "-" (minus) key all the
way to 0.30 This view may not be to everyone's taste, but it has the effect of making all the ground
textures much, much crisper. With todays widescreen monitors it also provides a realistic field of view.

This may not apply to everyone, but sometimes setting frame rate to unlimited can provide for
smoother flights, but at the slight expense of some blurring and the occasional stutter. This is the
opposite experience to FS9, where locked frames always performed best. This also works best since
FSX-Acceleration/SP2 was released. Try this for yourself to see if it helps add some smoothness.

SHIFT+ O (not zero, but the letter O) allows you to look around using your mouse in most views, and
simulates head movement. Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out on areas of interest. The "-"
(minus) key held down is a simple way to zoom back out more quickly. It's a poor man's TrackIR!

Try to keep your Windows desktop resolution the same as that used by FSX. Believe it or not, running
FSX at the highest resolution your monitor and video card combination can support, will yield better
visuals and smoother frame rates than bringing your screen resolution down to an artificially lower
value.

When exploring the WA56 surrounds for the first time, dont be in a rush and whiz across the
landscape in your fastest aircraft at 500 knots. Grab the microlight motorized glider and press the S
until the view changes to directly behind it. Press and hold - to zoom right out, then use SHIFT+O
to freely look around. Crank up the throttle with F4 and swing your mouse from side to side as if to
move your head. Youll be amazed how much fun it is using that combination. Give it a try!

Want to explore WA56 on foot? Why not download Orbx's free "BOB" utility, which allows you to
literally walk around the airfield and explore. You'll even hear footsteps and birds singing in the trees!
You can grab BOB from http://fullterrain.com/freeware.html

Pressing "Q" (Sound off) will give you some FPS back, but of course at the expense of total silence!
Perhaps a nice mode to fly with when youre listening to your MP3 player.

Disable your Anti-Virus program while running FSX. At Orbx we use NOD32 AV, which allows us to
"exclude" the FSX folder from virus checks which avoids each file being processed by the AV engine
during loading and flights. If you are worried about security, just pull out your internet connection
cable (unless of course you are relying on it for real-time weather etc).

Give the above tips a try and you will find WA56 a smoother more enjoyable experience, and in some cases,
you will be able to drag the autogen density sliders further to the right.
