9.1 Introduction

Colour coding of plant and pipework serves several important purposes which are:

- It facilitates easy identification of contents of pipelines. This is efficient from

an operating point of view and can be vital in emergencies such as fire, tank
overflows, etc.

- It facilitates training of new employees. With little explanation they are able
to trace all process and product pipelines. It also enables them to identify and
locate equipment, easily and quickly.

- As with the regular painting systems, the paint used for colour coding serves
the normal function of protection from atmospheric corrosion, sand, water, etc.
of the outside surfaces of pipelines.

- Painting with specific colours makes the painted objects prominent and attracts
attention in case of emergency, thereby promoting safety.

- By presenting a clean appearance, colour coding enhances the goodwill and

morale of the employees.

9.2. Scope

This Specification only concerns colour coding of pipelines and services in above
ground installations. Methods of application of paints/coatings and colour finishing
are detailed in an Engineering Specification (30.99.37.901), in which the former
colour finish ADCO Blue (BS 4800 - 18 E 51) is to be replaced by Light Grey - RAL
7035 on pipework and White - RAL 9010 on vessels.

This Specification is based upon BS 1710 : 1984 amended 1989, "Identification of

pipelines and services". (This standard should not be confused with colour coding for
pipes during construction which is applied in order to identify material composition).

Three methods of identification are included:

- basic identification colours only
- basic identification colours and code indications
- basic identification colours used in conjunction with an ADCO colour coding
scheme.

9.3. General

9.3.1 All methods of identification shall be compatible with pipe and operating
conditions.

9.3.2 All pipework is originally painted throughout its entire length in accordance with
the finish colour as specified in ADCO Standard Specification 30.99.37.901. This
finish colour is the protective or decorative colour.

9.3.3 Where banding is adopted, the decorative or protective colour of the pipe shall not
be any of the basic identification colours.
9.3.4 The basic identification shall be applied at all junctions, at both sides of every valve,
entry into or from every piece of equipment or vessel, bulkhead and wall penetration
and any other place where identification is necessary.

9.3.5 If the pipeline has been coded for fire fighting all the valves and flanges shall be
painted red.

9.4 Methods of application

9.4.1 Basic identification colour only

Where only indication of the basic nature of the fluid is required the basic
identification colour shown in table 1 shall be applied by one of the following
methods:

- Painted on the pipe over the whole length.

- Painted on the pipe, as a band round the complete circumference, over

a length of 150mm at points specified in 9.3.4, and at least every 50
meters.

- Applied by wrapping around the pipe, at points specified in 9.3.4, and

at least every 50 meters, an adhesive band of the basic identification
colour over a length of 150 mm. This is the preferred method for
insulated pipework where the insulation is covered by protective
cladding.

9.4.2 Basic identification colours and code indications

Code indications may be applied to the basic identification colours described in 9.4.1
to give more specific information about the nature of the fluid or the hazard. Code
indications shall be:

9.4.2.1 Safety colours (see table 2) in the form of colour banding

- Red for fire

- Yellow for warning
- Auxiliary blue in conjunction with green basic colour for fresh water

The safety colours shall be applied as bands 150mm wide if the pipe is painted in the
base identification colour. If the base identification colour is applied as bands, the
safety colour shall be applied between two bands of base identification colour each
150mm long.

9.4.2.2 Information

Information shall be given regarding the nature of the contents of the pipe by using
one or more of the following systems.

- name either in full or an accepted abbreviation

- chemical symbol
- hazard symbol to be applied over the yellow warning safety colour
- flow arrow

Names, chemical symbols and flow arrows shall be in black or white in order to
contrast clearly with the colour of the pipe or with the basic identification colour.
They shall be placed directly on the pipe or on a label fixed to the pipe near the basic
identification colour. Where labels are to be used on an installation in conjunction
with a safety colour the background colour of the label shall be that of the safety
colour.

9.4.3 Basic identification colours used in conjunction with an ADCO colour coding
systems

The basic identification colours only designate broad categories of fluids and it will
often be necessary to break these down further depending upon function. e.g. the
basic identification colour for all oils is brown, but it may be necessary to differentiate
between the live crude, stabilised crude, lubrication oil, seal oil etc. In this case the
same principles apply, in that the base identification colour will identify the prime
nature of the pipe contents and supplementary banding will provide further
identification.

The base colour will be applied in two bands 150mm in length applied either side of
the colour code indication. The colour code indication will consist of one band
150mm in length or three bands of 50mm in length as shown in table 3.

Additional information about the nature of the contents of the pipe may be given as
shown in 9.4.2.2 and Attachments A & B.
