Kitt Kubes Exhibition

Kitt Kubes exhibition presented four art structures that represented the transition from
hands on pieces of art (physical), to mechanical structures involving paper. Being that his
artwork consisted of mostly scrapyard pieces, Kube explained that these artifacts helped him
create phenomena based things. Kubes exhibition was displayed in a lowly lit room, and when
asked about the purpose of the low lighting, Kube compared his exhibition to a drive-in movie
theatre, saying you wouldnt go to one during the day.

There were two circular, hands-on pieces of art, that represented the physical side of
Kubes exhibition. One piece displayed its art within the structure, as when the circular object
was spun, liquids and substances would combine, resulting in the presentation of different
textures. The other circular structure relied on the lowly lit environment to showcase its art.
When spun, sand within the structure would move around, as an image would be reflected on the
ceiling above. Kube pointed out that he wanted to create agitators within the art, when dealing
with these two structures, as both used substances within their circular shapes to display an
image.

The two other pieces of art in the exhibition were paper structures, in which marked the
transition of the exhibition from physical to paper. Kube explained the purpose of this transition
as he said that paper has a real typography to it, and that it allows for him to offer different
perspectives. The art of the first paper structure involved wind, paint, and water marks, as thin
metal scraps were used to hang pieces of paper around the structure. Wind would cause the paint,
from within the structure, to spread on to the pieces of paper. Water droplets were then added to
the paper, through a machine in the middle of the structure. The result of this process were pieces
of paper that displayed a mixture of strayed paint and water marks. The second paper structure
involved colored lighting that illuminated a paper structure from below. The result was a colored
image on the ceiling, that combined the colors of the lighting through the paper structure. Kube
explained the purpose behind these structures, by saying that he wanted to reproduce art on the
main piece of art.

Kubes art is certainly abstract, as the structures showcased in this exhibition do not point
towards reality. Kubes art can be compared to Mark Bradfords paintings, as they both are
abstract, and are made from scraps. Seeing the strucutres of Kubes exhibition, it is hard to tell
what his intentions were, and I think Kubes creativity comes from this concept. Kube talked
about how he messes with the materials in the effort of initiating an idea in his head. Kube said,
I will have a concept, then as I go through the process, I notice what I like.

It took time for me to somewhat understand Kitt Kubes art, as his explanations helped to
define the purposes of his structures. I was confused by Kubes processes though, as he
explained that he got the idea of a painting structure, from a roadside memorial. He grasped the
idea of transition from this memorial, as a familys loss would cause a transition in their lives.
From this concept, Kube came up with his painting structure, which helps the transition from a
physical to paper aspect. Overall, Kubes exhibition was certainly one of a kind, as it involved
abstract art, that was developed from weird concepts.
