Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiners
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

PART A
In one of the old fuel station the metallic body of the fuel storage was found corroded. This gave
an idea for a manufacturer to incorporate the corrosion prevention method during manufacturing
stage. The manufacturer had an option to adopt one of the method among polymer coating and
powder coating of metal oxides or ceramic powders.
Debate on the statement Polymer coating is superior corrosion control method over Powder
coating of metal oxides or ceramic powders
Your debate should emphasise on:
1. Compare and contrast the above corrosion control methods with their advantages and
disadvantages
2. State and justify your opinion

PART B
B1 In one of the recent report by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), New Delhi, surrounding
cities to river Yamuna generate about 4200 Million Liters per Day (MLD) of sewage water.
However about 1952 MLD is being treated and the rest is being discharged into river Yamuna
directly. In this region there are about 40 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and out of which 31
are unable to treat sewage as per the water quality criteria of CPCB mainly for the parameters
such as total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand.
1.1 Identify the problems associated with these STPs for being unable to treat the sewage water
1.2 Suggest and describe any two methods to reduce chemical oxygen demand level that can
be adopted to improve the efficiency of these STPs
1.3 Indicate the advantages/limitations of the methods you have described

B2 Indian energy requirement is majorly met by thermal power. Boilers used to produce steam are
integral components of thermal power plants. There are many instances of boiler failures due
to hydrogen, fatigue, pitting, phosphate gouging, stress corrosion cracking, caustic gouging, etc.
(Fig 2). However chemical treatment of boiler feed water is adopted to reduce failure of
industrial boilers. The chemicals used include various phosphates, caustic soda, ammonia,
amines, oxygen scavengers, etc.

2.1 Interpret the role of any three chemicals listed for the chemical treatment of boiler feed
water
2.2 Justify the continuous monitoring required while using any two of these chemicals

B3 Indian Space Research Organization launched GSLV- Mark III in 2007. Half of its weight
constituted of a solid oxidizer (Fig. 2). We can see a large amount of smoky exhaust from the
launching vehicle. The smoke consists of a mixture of water vapor and aluminum oxide.
