Section C [ 25 Marks]
1 I have often been asked in the past to write the story of my life and my life s
work. Somehow I was reluctant to do so. Perhaps, it is because I have always
shied away from anything that puts me in the limelight. Some have even called
me a recluse. The truth is, I am happiest living and working quietly.
2 What was it then that moved me to write this book? Certain words repeated 5
over the years hit home: You must write. The story of Genting and you does
not belong to you alone. Its a part of Malaysias success story. You have a duty
to tell it. Your life is so rich in experience. It would be a waste not to share it.
Yet, even as I wrote the first few chapters, I was ambivalent about letting them
see the light of day. Then came Gentings 35th Anniversary in the year 2000. On 10
such a significant occasion, I was persuaded to release the history of Genting,
essentially in pictorial form. In a couple of years, Genting will celebrate its 40 th
birthday. Im now in my eighties. Its time to tell the whole story.
When I was young, I was shy, an introvert. By a kind twist of fate, just after
3 leaving my native Anxi on a boat for Malaya, I realized my handicap and made 15
a conscious effort to overcome it. I reached out positively with friendliness and
sincerity and won friends instantly. Since then, the same approach has never
failed me in interacting with others.
Parental teachings in a traditional Chinese upbringing have taught me to be
4 humble, polite and respectful to others. Those who know me know that I do not 20
put on airs. I can rub shoulders with tycoons and high officials; I can also get
along fine with hawkers and manual workers.
When it comes to appointments, I have a habit of being punctual. Once I
5 promise to meet someone, I always make it a point to arrive 10 minutes before
the appointment time. To me, all appointments are important. I do not make 25
excuses to cancel an appointment just because the other party is not an important
person.
I live a simple life with discipline. Habitually, I get up early but have no
6 fixed time for going to bed. Sometimes, I stay up late going through documents
or pondering on certain issues. Even in my sleep, I would wake up with some 30
ideas and start making notes and drawing diagrams.
I am well known to my colleagues and staff as a tough taskmaster, but those
who work with me can vouch that I drive myself just as relentlessly as I do
7 others. I believe the way to succeed is not only to be efficient but also to be able
to do things in the shortest possible time. In the commercial world, quick 35
actions and responses are essential.
I believe in the power of conviction. When I make a decision and believe
strongly that it is the right one, I will go head on with it, no matter what odds I
8 am up against. My decision to go ahead with the development of Genting
Sempah into a holiday resort is now a well-known example of how stubborn I 40
could be when I made up my mind.
Genting and I have come a long way since we started building the access road
9 up Gunung Ulu Kali. Looking back, I have no regrets.

32. Read the following poem and answer the questions that follow.

The Living Photograph by Jackie Kay

My small grandmother is tall there,

Straight back, white, broderie anglaise shirt,
pleated skirt, flat shoes, grey bun,
a kind, old smile round her eyes.
Her big hand holds mine,
white hand in the black hand.
Her sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye.

It was true, after all, that look.

My tall grandmother became small.
Her back round and hunched.
Her soup forgot to boil.
She went to the awful place grandmothers go.
Somewhere unknown, unthinkable

But there she is still,

In the photo with me at three,
The crinkled smile is still living, breathing.
