1. News Article

"Fifty Years On, the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act

Continues to Reshape the United States." Migrationpolicy.org. N.p., 02

Mar. 2017. Web. 24 Mar. 2017.

The article Fifty Years On, the 1965 Immigration and Nationality

Act Continues to Reshape the United States, written by Muzaffar

Chishti, Faye Hipsman, and Isabel Ball overall explains the historic

significance of the Immigration and Nationality Act. My paper is written

on how American identity is defined by diversity, and this article helps

support that. It argues how the law dramatically changed the racial

and ethnic makeup of our country. This article was posted onto the

Migration Policy Institute. As a result, this source has great authority to

talk on immigration. Also, immigrants wrote this article, and because

they can relate to it you know the source is credible. I strongly agree

with this article, due to the fact that it explains how the Immigration

and Nationality Act changed the United States. One specific thing I

learned from this source was that in 1965 whites made up 84 percent

of the U.S. population, while Hispanics comprised for 4 percent and

Asians for less than 1 percent. 50 years later, white made up at 62

percent of the U.S. population Hispanics made up 16 percent, and

Asians made up 6 percent. As a result, I think this will be highly

significant for my project because statistics help to get a point across

and will make my argument stronger. I can connect this source to past

articles I have read in this class about American identity. I have learned

that America is known as a melting pot, because there are so many

different cultures. Knowing that and reading this article better helps

me understand why.

2. Print Book

Orchowski, Margaret Sands. The Law That Changed the Face of

America: The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. Lanham:

Rowman & Littlefield, 2015. Print.

The novel written by Margaret Orchowski talks about the

landmark decision that made America so diverse, known as the

Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. She tells the history of the

law and how it overall affected the United States. She discusses how

immigration laws have constantly been revised throughout the years

due to the ever-changing immigrant environment of the country. Not

only does she discuss the past, but also the present day issues. Such

as current debates about immigration, and why and who want to come

to the United States. Orchowski has great authority to speak on this

topic due to the fact that she is a congressional journalist and

immigration expert. As a result, she might be a little bias in her view of

immigration because this is something she is clearly very passionate

about. However, she is not here to tell her opinion, but give out facts

about this law. I believe that this book source is very informative

because it explores many different topics of immigration, which will be

very helpful for me in writing my paper. One piece of information that I

have gained from this source is that it talks about how immigration and

terrorism relate. This will be huge to include in my paper because it is a

topic that is debated on often. I can connect this to my major

assignment 2, as I wrote about the terrorist attack that happened on

September 11, 2001. I can connect these two sources together

because I will learn how immigration played a part in the devastating

attack on the United States.

3. Source of Choice

History.com Staff. "U.S. Immigration Since 1965." History.com.

A&E Television Networks, 2010. Web. 03 Apr. 2017.

The article U.S. Immigration since 1965 discusses how this

policy changed the demographic makeup of the American population.

The authors talk about the history of the act and how it came to be,

the immediate impact, debates on immigration, and how it lives on

today. This is a highly reliable source because the history.com staff

wrote it. They do a lot of studies and research on the topics they cover

before putting the information out there. Also, because it is a history

channel they are not going to put up random facts without proper

research behind it. This source will not be bias in any way because it is

not an opinionated source; it strictly just gives out facts and

information. I think that this is a great article because it gives a lot of

information about the history of the law, and while I will be talking

about how it affects American in the long run, knowing the history is

still important. For example, I learned that on signing the act into law,

President Lyndon B. Johnson stated, Is not a revolutionary bill. It does

not affect the lives of millions It will not reshape the structure of our

daily lives or add importantly to either our wealth or our power.

However, he couldnt be more wrong. The bill would have an

immediate and lasting impact on the United States. I agree with its

claims that there is no greater reflection of the impact of this act than

having Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States.

Having the article give real examples of how the Immigration Act

transformed America will be very useful for my paper. I can connect

this source to my most previous one because they both touch on

terrorism. Reading both of these together helps me understand how

immigration has led to terrorism. While I am going to talk about how

immigration makes up America, having this downfall, or

counterargument will make my paper stronger.

The article The Immigration Act of 1965 written by Edward

Kennedy talks about events leading up to the Immigration Act.

Kennedy explains how for more than forty years, the national-origins

quota system controlled Americas immigration policy. He goes on to

describe how the effort to eliminate the quota system began. This

source has great authority to talk on this topic because it was

published in the Annals of the American Academy of Political and

Social Science. Also, it is a peer-reviewed article so it is written by an

expert in this field, and also reviewed by other experts. I do not think

this article has much biases, preconceptions, or assumptions because

it is fact-based. I agree with these articles claims because it uses real

dates and is very specific, so I know it is correct. One thing I learned

from this article was that it was not until Congress overrode President

Truman's veto of the Immigration Act of 1952 that attempt to remove

the quota system commenced. This will be useful to my project in

helping me understand how difficult it was to get this law into place. I

can connect this source to my last one from history.com because they

both talk about the history of the law and what it was like prior to it.

Having both of these together will help me learn why it was so needed

and can help to make my argument stronger.

Keely, Charles B. "Effects of the Immigration Act of 1965 on

Selected Population Characteristics of Immigrants to the United

States." Demography. 8.2 (1971): 157-169. Print.

In Charles Keelys article Effects of the Immigration Act of 1965

on Selected Population Characteristics of Immigrants to the United

States he talks about how recent changes in the law have affected the

characteristics of immigrants coming to the United States. He

discusses how the law led to changes in the origin of immigrants. Keely

has great authority to speak on this topic due to the fact that he is in

the Department of Sociology at Western Michigan University. Because

of this, you know that he is an expert on what he is talking about. I also

dont have to question the sources credibility because it is a peer

review article so I know that his facts have been reviewed. Even

though he covers some controversial conversations, I think he remains

neutral in his article. I think this is article is a staple in my research

because it contains many factual topics. For example, I learned that

even though the volume of immigration increased, the distribution of

occupational levels remained about the same. This is significant

because this covers something that I havent read about yet in my

other sources. I can connect this source to my other peer review article

because they both talk about the abolition of the quota system. Having

these two articles together, I can learn more about the history of this

law and why and how it got put into place.

Chin, Gabriel J, and Rose C. Villazor. The Immigration and

Nationality Act of 1965: Legislating a New America. , 2015. Internet

resource.

In Gabriel Chins novel The Immigration and Nationality Act of

1965: legislating a new America he writes the first book on the 1965

Immigration Act. He discusses how it ended race-based immigration

quotas and reshaped America for good. This source has great authority

to speak on this topic because it was the first book to do so. I dont

have to question the credibility of it due to the fact that it is a book,

and has been reviewed. The author is not throwing out facts without

being sure of them. This book is one of my favorite sources because it

talks about legislating a new America which is the main point of my

paper, and as a result I agree with Chins claims. This is very significant

for my paper because we are talking about the same topic. My overall

message is to describe how the immigration act changed American

identity and it covers that. One thing I have learned that I wasnt well

informed on before was the political and economic issues the act led

to. I can connect this source to Muzaffar Chishtis article Fifty Years

On, the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act Continues to Reshape

the United States. Having these two together I learn how the law

dramatically changed the racial and ethnic makeup of our country.

Lee, Catherine. "Family Reunification and the Limits of

Immigration Reform: Impact and Legacy of the 1965 Immigration Act."

Sociological Forum. 30 (2015): 528-548. Print.

In Catherine Lees article "Family Reunification and the Limits of

Immigration Reform: Impact and Legacy of the 1965 Immigration Act"

she talks about the importance of family reunification. She explains

how family reunification plays a huge role in diversifying the United

States racial makeup, uniting families, and modernizing the

immigration system. I think this author has great authority to talk

about family reunification because she is affiliated with the

Department of Sociology in New Jersey. Also, it is peer reviewed so I

know her information is credible. I think that her article may be a little

bias due to the fact that she talks about how other people view this

topic. Although it is factual, she includes others opinions. I strongly like

and agree with this source due to the fact that she discusses

something none of my other sources do, family unification. For

example, I learned that family reunification replaced the racially

discriminatory national origins quota system. This is significant to my

project because this family reunification policy is a uniquely modern

political achievement. She also talks about the civil rights laws. I can

connect this source to my two peer review articles because they all

three cover abolition of the quota system. However, having this article

alongside those two I learn how the family reunification helped to

abolish this system.

8. Source of Choice

"The Geopolitical Origins of the U.S. Immigration Act of 1965."

Migrationpolicy.org. N.p., 02 Mar. 2017. Web. 03 Apr. 2017.

The article The Geopolitical Orgins of the U.S. Immigration Act of

1965 written by David S. FitzGerald and David Cook-Martn talks about

the 50th anniversary of this act. As a result, this article discusses the

history and legacy that the Immigration Act of 1965 left on America.

This article was posted onto the Migration Policy Institute. As a result,

this source has great authority to talk on immigration. I think this

source is very credible because two authors write it; therefore there is

different opinions and knowledge on the topic. . I strongly agree with

this article, due to the fact that it explains how the Immigration and

Nationality Act changed the United States. One specific thing I learned

from this source was that until 1965, the national-origins quotas

created a preference for immigration from countries in Northwestern

Europe, loosely restricted immigration from Southern and Eastern

Europe, and tightly restricted immigration from Asia, Africa, and the

colonized Caribbean. As a result, I think this will be highly significant

for my project because this source contains a lot of facts and will help

to make my argument stronger. I can connect this article to the other

article from the migration policy website because they both talk the

law dramatically changed the racial and ethnic makeup of our country

years later. Having these two together helps me learn the affect this

act had and still has on the United States.

Immigration Act." Center for Immigration Studies. N.p., n.d. Web. 03

Apr. 2017

The article Three Decades of Mass Immigration: The Legacy of

the 1965 Immigration Act" talks about how contrary to the president's

assertions, the act inaugurated a new era of mass immigration which

has affected the lives of millions. I think that this article is very credible

because it has many charts and graphs to prove its point. This will be

very significant for me when writing because proven facts will help to

make my argument stronger. I can connect this source to my first one

because they both use statistics to prove a point. Having these two

together helps me when writing my paper because I can connect the

two statistics together to make my argument stronger that the

Immigration act changed American identity.

In the video The Immigration Act of 1965 and its Effects it talks

about the day the immigration act was put into place. The video gives

real pictures of this day, and as a result I believe the credibility of it. It

also gives videos of and real clips of immigrations, so you know the

information is correct. This helps to gets its point across. I think there

may be some bias just because the facts are coming from people who

are actually immigrations. I think this is a great source because

although it is not long, it gives me a great start for my project. One

thing I learned from this video was that the act transformed the Asian

community specifically. This will be significant for my project because it

will allow me to go into great detail, which will make my essay

stronger. I can connect this source to other articles I have read about

Asian immigration. Having these two together will give me a lot of

information to put into my essay.
