A Chemical Engineering professional with three years of work experience as a Research Engineer in
Sumitomo Chemical Co.ltd. and with a post graduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the reputed
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

CAREER OBJECTIVE
To gain experience, knowledge and skill in the field of chemical engineering by consistent hard work in
challenging and diverse environment with a never give up attitude.

KEY SKILLS
Ability to adjust in any environment and take up challenging tasks.
Planning and design of experiments and their proper execution.
Design and modeling software: MATLAB, ASPEN and PROII.
Programming languages: C, Fortran 77.
Applications: MS Office
Languages known: Fluent in English, Hindi, and Bengali. Proficient in Japanese.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Research Engineer (Process Development) in Sumitomo Chemical Co.Ltd since Oct 2012
Sumitomo Chemical Co.Ltd is a Fortune 500 company with global reputation. The company
manufactures basic chemicals, petrochemicals, fine chemicals, agriculture chemicals and IT related
chemicals.
Job Responsibilities
Process Development: Feasibility studies of new processes. Design of experiments and collection
of laboratory experimental data for the purpose of modeling. Trial production of product via new
process. Laboratory Vapor Liquid Equilibrium experiments to obtain data for the purpose of
simulations.
Process Improvement/Plant rationalization: Modification of process conditions/parameters to
reduce steam consumption and thereby reducing the running cost.
Material balances and detailed simulations of the plant using Aspen.
Preparation of Process Flow diagrams, design philosophy and basic design sheet.
Planning and execution of necessary experiments and collection of data prior to plant tests.
PROJECT DETAILS
1. Equipment design and scale up August 2015-Present
The company is planning to increase the production capacity of a certain additive by 20% to
meet the growing market demand. For the same, the challenge was to check if the existing
equipment could handle the increased load and also find out debottleneck schemes for the
same.
Regular discussions with the production team to determine the possible bottleneck
areas.
Planning and execution of lab scale experiments on neutralization and liquid-liquid
separation and confirmation whether the existing equipment can handle increased
load.
Simulations on Aspen to confirm the possibilities of flood in the existing distillation
columns, carrying out case studies and suggesting a debottleneck scheme. (the
scheme is to be implemented during the capacity increase of the plant)
*Performed VLE tests to collect vapor-liquid equilibrium data and determined
whether NRTL coupled with UNIFAC estimated binary parameters would be accurate
in modeling the VLE of the system(to be used in the Aspen simulations)
Prepared the Process Flow diagram (still under revision), the design philosophy and
the basic design sheet (columns, heat exchangers, and reflux drum).
Involved in Plant tests and analysis of the plant data using PI.

2. Feasibility Studies May 2015 July 2015

The company was planning to develop a new process for the production of a certain additive
for rubber. For the same, the challenge was to carry out a feasibility study of the same. SRI
reports were also referred.
Determining the possible flow of the process( referring to SRI reports)
Making a process flow sheet.
Listing of all the necessary equipment
Calculation of the equipment cost and variable cost

3. Reduction of Caprolactam loss/steam cost in the existing Caprolactam Plant

Oct 2014 April 2015
The objective was to reduce the caprolactam loss in the plant to provide a merit of
500,000$/year but eventually methods were found out to reduce the steam consumption
resulting in a merit of 1000000$/year. Plant tests were done and results were confirmed.
Detailed simulation of the existing plant on Aspen.
Case studies to determine methods to reduce the caprolactam loss.
Sampling of liquid from the plant, planning and execution of lab scale experiments to
determine the solubility of caprolactam in impurities and solvent. (Gas
chromatography analysis was carried out to determine the composition)
Crystallization experiments of caprolactam to determine whether un-installation of a
particular tower (thereby reducing steam consumption) would affect the amount of
crystals/purity of caprolactam as a whole.

4. Process Development- Development of a new process for the production of cyclohexanone

oxime Feb 2014 Sept 2014
The aim of this project is to develop a new, more eco-friendly, undesired by-product free
process for the production of cyclohexanone oxime. The project is at the R&D level, to be
continued in 2016.
Execution of experiments to obtain semi-batch reactor data. Decided on the
experimental conditions (flow rate of air, temperature, Pressure etc.) and suggested a
possible reaction mechanism by analysis of the data using MATLAB.
Was partly involved in the execution of experiments on Vapor liquid equilibrium to
obtain the necessary binary parameters to be used in simulations.
Was involved in planning and execution of trial production of caprolactam via the new
process on a little larger than lab scale equipment. Conducted simple distillation and
crystallization for the purification of cyclohexanone oxime and successfully achieved
the desired concentration of the final product.

5. Plant rationalization of the existing cyclohexane plant March 2013 Jan 2014
The challenge was to suggest a possible reason for the low selectivity of cyclohexane in the
commercial scale reactor. The project is being continued.
Collection of batch reactor data and finding out the correct reaction mechanism using
MATLAB.
Experiments on RTD to model the non-ideality in the commercial reactor.
