Indesign log: Preliminary task

By Amy Hannah

Here is the page layout design I have decided to use for the front cover of my magazine for a
college/educational institution. Using the guidelines to construct any typography elements
throughout developing the front cover.

Next using the rectangle frame tool, I had drawn the rectangle suitably to place my dominant image
within for the front cover. This then allows the image to be the accurate size for the cover.
After selecting file and place, I had then used the selection tool (to move the image for alignment
purposes) and the direct selection tool to alter the images size and scale. Once adjusted correctly, I
could then work on typography elements.

Using the rectangle tool again, I had created a box for the skyline of the magazine. Using this would
allow me to create a box frame that would strike the intended audience for my publication.
Having done this, I then used the colour picker tool to select the use of colour I wanted for the house
style of the magazine.

Having completed this, I decided that the choice of colour may appear too harshly to the intended
audience and they would not be able to read textual and typography elements clearly. A way of
improving this was by dropping the opacity. I had used the scroll the opacity scroll tool and had
found the opacity at 71% fit suitably.
The next step was to add typography, this case being the skyline text. I had chosen the font I found
suitable for the front cover then using the type tool, I had drawn a box within the rectangle box to
type my skyline phrase.

I decided to alter the colours of the typography allowing the font to have a stroke, with colour this
would appeal more to my audience.
Using the colour picker tool, I had chosen the colour as shown above. I also set the stroke weight to
1pt to allow the typography to be clearer for the audience as previously mentioned.
Repeating similar steps to my previous construction of typography I had created my masthead. For
my masthead I particularly paid attention to size and scale, setting the first word as a larger font size
to my second word to create connotations for the audience. The connotations focussing on how the
college magazine will focus on the English department at the college institution. I had also set the
stroke weight as 5pt and 4pt for audiences to notice the masthead immediately.

I then created a puff to entice the audience, this time using the ellipse frame tool, I had scaled it
accurately for the typography to fit inside.
Here is the end result of my puff in which I produced.

I had then proceed to create my anchorage text to support the dominant image on the front cover.
I then had added all other cover lines to ensure that readers would have an insight to what initial
content will be in the college magazine.

This is the end result of the editing process.

This is the page layout design for the contents page of my print magazine.

I had then used the rectangle frame tool to fill the box with the initial colour tool I had wanted to fill
it with. Keeping to a house style throughout my magazine to engage with my intended audience.
This is the colour I had decided to make the double contents page.

Here, I had used the rectangle tool to place an image in for a feature article for the magazine. I then
used the
Here I had produced my main heading for my contents page. I had set the stroke weight to 5pt, this
allows audiences to recognise what format and context the page takes.

I had used the colour theme picker tool. This allowed me to fit the typography within the house style
theme.

Here I had placed another image that will be relevant to the article content. Placing it aligned to the
other images visible on the page.
I had then created subheading boxes using the rectangle tool frame. Having done this, I had filled
the boxes in a purple fill keeping to theme.

Now that the sub-heading boxes have been created, I then, using the type tool had proceeded to
create subheadings containing the page numbers for the magazine this being done so audiences
can locate the articles quickly and accurately.
