Direct Instruction:
As a warm up exercise practice skip counting by fives until 60.
Review the face of the clock and the hands.

Go around the clock and discuss events and activities we do throughout the day. Make
times to match these events and activities. As we make these times, discuss a.m. and p.m.

Guided Practice:
Complete Word Problem Day 2: Chuck had baseball practice 15 minutes before 7:00.
What time did Chucks baseball practice start? If it lasted for one hour, what time did it
end?
Students will use the steps from the PSA (highlight important information, solve the
problem, and check their answer) to solve the word problem. Check answers orally with
the class.

Differentiation:
Tier 1: Students will work in a small group with the teacher. The teacher will review the parts of
a clock and telling time to the nearest five minutes and nearest minute. The teacher will show
students examples of each. The teacher will review the PSA steps and help students solve the
PSA word problem. The teacher will help students with writing the times for the A Day in the
Life booklet and Interactive Notebook activity.
Tier 2: Students will work with a partner and use the PSA steps to solve the PSA word problem.

Students will complete the A Day in the Life booklet and Interactive Notebook activity.

Lesson Closure:
Review telling time to the nearest five minutes and nearest minute. Review that the numbers on a
clock tell us the hour and number of minutes, counting by fives. Review that each tick mark
between the numbers represent one minute. Review the terms a.m. and p.m.

Independent Practice:
Students will create A Day in the Life booklet. Students will create a booklet to showcase
events throughout their day. Students will draw the hands to match the time of the day, write a
sentence, and draw a picture to match the event. Students will complete the Interactive Notebook
activity. Students will cut out the Daily Events squares and glue the squares onto a piece of paper
making a flap. Students will write a time that matches when that event would occur during the
day. Underneath the flap, students will glue a clock and draw the hands to match the time on the
outside of the flap. Times can be written in 5 minute or 1 minute increments.

Assessment:
Students will be assessed formatively throughout the lesson, checking for understanding of
reading and writing time to the nearest minute and five minutes using a.m. and p.m. correctly.
Students will be assessed using the Interactive Notebook activity. Students who complete the
Interactive Notebook activity with at least 75% accuracy will achieve mastery of the objective.
