Standard: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course
of the text.

Analysis
Students read a short story, wrote what they thought the theme was, pull 3 main ideas from the
story and supporting evidence (quote)
+ Students could do this (proficient)
- Students could not do this (not proficient)

Trends/Patterns:
Identifying theme was a strength of most of the class (15/21
students)
Not reaching 504 and ELL students
Strengths and Causes:
Identifying theme- more experience with theme than other items
Proficient students used direct quotes as support
Amount of writing showed student effort and basic content in the
story
Obstacles and Causes:
The way the assessment is presented
ELL struggling to grasp the idea of theme or language in the story
Small sample size

The number of students proficient on identifying the theme of a story will increase from 71% to
85% in two weeks using a variety of short stories.
