ABSTRACT

Planning of distribution system is a complex multi-objective problem. The long term

planning of distribution system is mainly associated with location of substation, feeder
routing and conductor selection for the feeders considering load growth. A simple and
efficient mathematical approach is used to find out the optimal substation location and feeder
routing in radial distribution system considering operational and technical constraints. The
conductors for the feeders of the network are selected by minimizing the cost function that is
proposed in this work. The cost function consists of energy loss cost and investment cost of
conductors. The feeder reconfiguration is another aspect for the planning of distribution
system. A method based on loss index is proposed to select the tie lines for the network
reconfiguration. The reconfiguration of the distribution network with the tie lines is carried
out in order to reduce the system power loss. The reconfiguration also makes the system more
reliable and improves the quality of power. The methods are illustrated by using two
examples of 30 node and 54 node radial distribution systems.
