Dear Dr. Bruce

Several deficiencies in my scientific writing were present but through adherence to the 6

student learning outcomes (SLOs) these have been corrected. This cover letter serves as a guide

to demonstrate adequate achievement of the aforementioned SLOs through a compilation of my

best revised work in a personal portfolio. Completion and revision of my Extended Definition

assignment and a Scholars Notebook entry along with this Cover Letter prove definitive

achievement of all the SLOs.

Inclusion of my Extended Definition into this discussion of SLO achievement was a clear

choice due to the observance of the broad range of SLOs this document has the potential to

address. Following an in depth revision of this document it was clear that SLOs 1, 2, 4 and 5 had

been adequately achieved. The Extended Definition assignment serves to provide an example of

mastery in this SLO by deducing the audience here as informal and adapting the writing to fit

this need. For example due to the knowledge of an informal audience I was able to safely

conclude that I would need to define some words in the text such as was the case when I defined

a photoautotroph as an organism that creates its own food using light as the energy source

directly in the text. SLO 2 was achieved by my use of alphabetized APA style citations in the

Extended Definition. In addition to these SLOs this document also meets SLO 4 by my use of

headings to guide the reader into the next topic as well as ease them into the depths of the
material. For instance, I used a heading titled Overall Process followed by two headings each

titled after a part of the overall process in an effort to organize my thoughts clearly. Finally the

Extended Definition document meets SLO 5 through the use of wrapped images around text and

use of consistent headings and subheadings. Through revision of the Extended Definition I was

able to achieve concision and eliminate redundancy by omissions of repeated material.

In addition to the Extended Definition this cover letter serves as support for the adequate

achievement of SLO 1 and in itself achieves SLO 3. SLO 1 is further supported by the writing of

this formal cover letter which uses different diction and exhibits formal characteristics such as a

proper salutation and closing. This cover letters purpose is to persuade the reader that the SLOs

have been achieved adequately which serves as evidence of achievement of SLO 3 by the use of

repeated claims backed by explicit evidence.

Successful mastery of SLO 6 came through an activity entered into our student Scholars

Notebooks in which collaboration was required. The activity required our team to compare and

carefully analyzed several potential guidelines by which to adhere to in the writing of our review.

Analysis and critique of various works was performed here and this satisfies SLO 6 sufficiently.

Upon completion of this course and through my demonstrated achievements of the SLOs

I have been able to add a variety of tools to my writers toolbox which I plan to utilize throughout

the remainder of my undergraduate studies as well as in future career pathways. It is my hope

that this letter was sufficient in explaining my achievement of the SLOs and I truly have learned

a wealth of knowledge that will continue to serve me in my future writing tasks. Thank you.
