ABSTRACT

Hypertension is the most common medical disorder encountered during pregnancy. Pregnancy
Induced Hypertension (PIH) is one of the most common causes of both maternal and neonatal
morbidity, affecting about 5 to 8% of pregnant women nowadays. The study was conducted in St.
Johns General Hospital in Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay last February 2017. The purpose of the
study was to extrapolate the onset of pre-eclampsia to a working 29-year-old primigravida living
from a far flung area of the said municipality and how it is managed and treated throughout her
pregnancy. The study begins by defining and classifying hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.
The normal vascular and renal physiological changes which occur during pregnancy are detailed.
We summarized the intriguing aspects of pathophysiology of preeclampsia and the anatomical
explanation of the involving organ. The diagnostic tools and laboratory tests done and available
for screening preeclampsia, management and goals of treatment and its benefits and potential
risks associated its various antihypertensive drugs are also comprehensively described.
Preeclampsia still remains an enigma, and the present management focuses on monitoring and
treatment of its manifestations. Early detection of pregnant women at risk, awareness of pregnant
women on the said disorder and adherence to prenatal and postnatal check-ups could be a great
help to lower the morbidity rate of the maternal disorder in the country today.
