Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

Enhance the design skills to design a mechanical components.

Analyze design procedures for various components like gears, clutches and various drives

Analyze different modes of failures and select different parameters

Unit I
Springs : Introduction to springs, Types and terminology of springs, Stress and
deflection equations, Series and parallel connection, Design of helical springs, Design
against fluctuating load, Concentric springs, Helical torsion springs, Spiral springs,
Multi-leaf springs, Optimum design of helical spring
Unit II
Friction Clutches and Brakes : Introduction to clutches, Multi-disk clutches, Cone
clutches and centrifugal clutches, Torque transmitting capacity, Introduction to
brakes and energy equation, Block brake with short and long shoe, Introduction to
internal expanding brake, Band brakes and Disk brakes, Friction materials
Unit III
Design Of Spur Gears : Force analysis of spur gears and gear tooth failures, Beam
strength of gear tooth, Permissible bending stress and effective load on gear tooth,
Wear strength of gear tooth
Unit IV
Design of Helical Bevel and Worm Gears : Introduction to helical gears,
Terminology and virtual number of teeth, Tooth proportions and force analysis, Beam
strength of helical gears, Effective load on gear tooth and wear strength of helical
gears, Introduction to bevel and worm gears, Terminology of bevel and worm gears
Unit V
Design of Belt and Chain Drives : Geometrical relationships, Analysis of belt
tensions, Condition for maximum power transmission, Characteristics of belt drives,
Selection of flat belt, V- belt, Selection of V belt, Roller chains, Geometrical
relationship, Polygonal effect, Power rating of roller chains, Design of chain drive,
Introduction to belt drives and belt construction, Introduction to chain drives
Unit VI
Rolling and Sliding contact bearings : Introduction to rolling contact bearings,
Static load carrying capacity, Stribeck`s equation, Dynamic load carrying capacity
and equivalent bearing load, Load life relationship, Selection of bearing life from
manufacturer catalogue, Bearing failure and lubrication of rolling contact bearings,
Basic modes of lubrication, Petroff`s equation, Hydrostatic step bearing and energy
losses in Hydrostatic step bearing, Raimondi and boyd method, Bearing design-
selection of parameters
