Essential Question

How can experience as a combat specialist contribute to a civilian career in

medicine.

Project/Showcase Description:

I will explain the job duties of a combat medic and their work environment
and qualities that you need to have. I will demonstrate how a combat medic
treats a wound in the battlefield by applying stitches. I will transition this to a
trauma nurse how they take blood pressure and explain their duties, their work
environment and qualities that they need to have. After I will explain how a
combat medic transitions to a career in medicine, by talking about the
similarities of a combat medic and a trauma nurse and also what is different
about these two careers.

1. What personal interest do you have in this topic? Why have you chosen this topic for
your Senior Project/Showcase? I would like to serve in the military and help by saving
lives. I was also inspired by the ROTC program when I went to Fort Jackson training
base. I also took the time to think about this because its is something that I can do for a
certain time. After I serve I want to be a trauma nurse that is why I am going to connect
the job of a combat medic and a trauma nurse how their jobs are similar and different,
how does a combat medic transition to a civilian career in medicine.

2. What research questions will you seek to answer? What kinds of sources might you
look for? I will look for questions such as what is a combat medic connection between a
trauma nurse? What are they required programs to take to pursue a career as a trauma
nurse?

3. Who is a person (specifically, or in general) with experience or expertise in this field

you might interview? What understanding do you hope to gain from this person? A
person who I might interview is a friend of my mother. She served for the Marines in
worked with some of the sailors in medicine. She was able to see what the job was as a
medic and help the sailors. She also went to her checkups with them.

4. What situations, events, or places could you observe or experience to gain insight
into your topic? I actually experience some of what a combat medic does when I went to
Fort Jackson. I was able to carry a cadet on my soldiers pretending to be unconscious.
It was very hot and I had a instructor guiding me and pressuring me telling me to run
fast and get to a safe place. Also we went inside the base where they had a medical
clinic and I observed how a cadet gets checked by a combat medic.

5. What challenges might you encounter with your research or project? What
assistance or tools will you need to overcome them? I might have a hard time gathering
materials for my hands on part because medics use needles and biohazard equipment
that cant be done without special practice, also a trauma nurse uses advanced
machines and other medical equipment that is used in the hospitals. However I thinking
by talking to my mentors and getting help will help me come up with something that I
can show them that a combat medic does, and what a trauma nurse does.

6. What other questions or concerns do you have about your Senior Capstone Project
at this time? At this time I dont have any questions, I do in class I ask my teachers or
someone who could help me.
