Totalitarianism

- Photos
- Videos
- Handouts

Lesson

Hook: Who would you vote for?


Time: 10 minutes
1. Explain that we are having an election and this is all we know about our
candidates to run our country
2. Have students by raising their hands only once vote for who they would like
to be our next leader
3. The next slide tells you who each of the candidates are
4. Ask them to explain why they selected that person and if they would like to
change their vote now knowing who the candidates are and knowing what
happens if they are in charge
5. This shows how some people are elected

Time: 30 minutes
1. Slide: After WWI: Explain how Europe is in a state of uncertainty. Especially
the countries that lost. Ask students to recall which countries lost the war.
2. Slide: Totalitarianism: Play video, ask students what are some of the common
characteristics that appeared in the different countries of the video
3. Slide: Totalitarianism: Define Totalitarianism
4. Slide: Examples: Some of the examples in the video are USSR, Italy,
Germany, Japan
5. Slide: USSR: Talk about how the USSR was a totalitarian government
6. Slide: Italy: Talk about how Italy was a totalitarian government
7. Slide: Germany: Talk about how Germany was a totalitarian government
8. Slide: Who said it?: Do the quiz that shows how it is sometimes hard to figure
out if Taylor Swift or Hitler said certain quotations and explain how someone
like Hitler can come to power
9. Slide: Life: Discuss what life would have been like growing up under a
totalitarian system
Critical Thinking: Political Situation
Time: 30-35 minutes
1. Slide: Life: Discuss what life would have been like growing up under a
totalitarian system
2. Slide: Hitlers Youth: Play video of Hitlers speech and discuss the message
Hitler is sending to the youth and also his quote from Mein Kampf
3. Photo Analysis: Students will be sharing their image with a partner but writing
their own response to the questions
4. After students fill out their own answers, go through the images all together

Conclusion: End Discussion


Time: 5 minutes
1. Go through the questions at the end of the PowerPoint
