Assignment title Semiconductor Devices and Amplifier Circuits

Purpose of this assignment

This assignment will give you the opportunity to show your knowledge and skills in analysing
electronic devices and circuits as well as design and test electronic circuits that uses those devices

Scenario

You are applying to work as an electronic testing engineer for a company. You are required to
demonstrate your knowledge and skills in electronic devices and amplifiers.

Task 1: (LO 1: 1.1) Apply testing procedures to a range of semiconductor devices and circuits
(P)
1. Describe briefly the characteristics and applications of a diode, zener, LED, photodiode, triac, BJT
(bipolar, unipolar and fieldeffect), photo-transitors. For each application, you must explain the
principle of operation, mention the materials used, draw and discuss the volt-ampere characteristics
and mention the applications. Then collect the manufacturers datasheet of each device and explain
the detailed information.
2. Describe methods to test the characteristics as well as its functions of each of the devices above.
3. Verify the characteristics of the devices and operations of those devices in Question 1 by
simulations and labs.

Task 2: (LO1: 1.2) Use relevant literature for testing semiconductor devices and circuits (P, M,
D)
4. Design a security alarm system that can detect forced entry into a building. Assume that the building
have 4 rooms, a sensor will be used to detect the intrusion and initiate the audible alarm.
a. Give the block diagram of the security alarm circuit and explain the function of each block.
b. Give the circuit diagram and explain the function of each component or device of the circuit.
c. Choose proper component or device of the circuit.
d. Simulate the circuit and show the waveform of each block
e. Verify the circuit your design in lab and give the results

5. Design a bias circuit for BJT to operate in its amplification mode.

a. Produce a block diagram of the circuit and explain the function, input and output waveform of
each block.
b. Draw the complete circuit and explain function of each component or device
c. Calculate the rated voltage and current, and other specification of each device
d. Simulate the circuit to its function
e. Describe the troubleshooting procedures
f. Develop the circuit, trouble shoot the circuit and verify your design

Task 3: (LO2) Understand the characteristics and operation of amplifier circuits (P, M, D)
6. Design a small signal amplifier using BJT with a voltage gain of 50. Repeat the steps as in Question
5.
7. Repeat Question 6 using FETs
8. Design the audio preamplifier for a portable public address system that has the block diagram
below. The dc supply voltages are provided by a battery pack or by an electronic power supply. the
amplifier should operate from 30 V dc to get a large enough signal voltage swing to provide a
maximum of 6 W to the speaker. The audio voltage preamplifier should be in two-stage .
