Prerequisites MTH140
Compulsory Calculus, Early Transcendentals (8th Ed.), by James Stewart (2015) with
Textbook Enhanced WebAssign (ISBN: 1305616693).
WebAssign is an online platform that contains online support for this textbook,
including many useful resources. The use of WebAssign is not mandatory for
this course, but it is strongly recommended.
There is an electronic version of the textbook which requires an access code. An
access code is included with the physical copy of the textbook, or one can be
purchased separately through the Ryerson Campus Store.
Note: Previous editions of the textbook are incompatible.
Course Four hours of lecture and one hour of lab per week.
Organization
Learning At the end of this course the successful student will be able to:
Objectives
1. Develop analytical and numerical expressions from real problems. (1b)
2. Apply appropriate mathematical principles to evaluate expressions, and
find and test potential solutions. (1b)
3. Understand problem statements and identify objectives. (2a)
4. Apply engineering mathematics and computations to solve mathematical
models. (2c)
5. Follow an investigation plan to answer a complex problem. (3d)
Homework Recommended homework questions for practice will be listed on the course
webpage.
Cheating
Evaluation Guidelines
1. All quizzes, tests, and the exam will be closed-book and written without any calculators or
other aids.
2. You must bring your Ryerson Photo ID to both tests and to the final exam.
5. Any tests or quizzes written in pencil or erasable pen may be ineligible for remarking.
6. There is no intrinsic reason for giving a non-zero mark for an incorrect solution. Part marks (if
any) are awarded entirely at the examiners discretion. If a test is submitted for re-marking,
the whole test may be re-marked. The result may possibly be that the student receives
a lower mark on any or all questions.
7. Students must read and comply with the Statement on Academic Ethics and the Senate
Resolution on Academic Dishonesty as found in the Senate Policy Statements distributed at
registration and available in the Department Office (Calendar 2016/17). Check also (http:
//www.ryerson.ca/content/dam/senate/policies/pol60.pdf). Talking to another
student, glancing over another students paper or being caught with non-allowed materials
during an evaluation may result in a zero mark for that evaluation and a record of academic
misconduct lodged with the Registrars office.
8. During an evaluation sharing of pencils, pens or erasers is NOT PERMITTED and PDAs,
phones and pagers must be turned off and out of reach.
9. During any evaluation, coats jackets and bags must be placed out of reach.
1
Changes to and clarifications of details in this course management form (such as room numbers for tests) will be
announced to the class on at least two different occasions before they take effect (except in unavoidable emergencies
which permit only one announcement).

Missed Evaluations
1. Medical Certificates: Students who cannot be present for a quiz, a test, or the final exam
because of illness must contact the First Year Common Engineering Office (416-979-5000
ext 4261, ENG377) prior to the time of the evaluation or within the time period stated in
Policy 134. Also, the student must contact the professor in three days to inform the
professor about missing the test and going to present his/her medical certificate to FYCEO
in three days. They must also submit a Ryerson-approved medical form filled out by their
doctor stating, among other things, that they were too ill to attend school on the day of the
evaluation and giving the expected duration of their illness (blank forms can be obtained
from the Department of Mathematics office or from other academic departments, or from the
web at http://www.ryerson.ca/senate/forms/medical.pdf). Besides illness, only
very serious reasons, properly documented, can be considered as valid excuses for missing
an evaluation. For more information on this consult the Calendar or www.ryerson.ca/
senate/policies/ (see Policies 134 and 150).
2. Religious Observance: Any quiz, test, or final exam which will be missed due to religious,
aboriginal, or spiritual observance must be requested within the first two weeks of class,
or in the case of the final exam within two weeks after the exam schedule is posted (in
keeping with Policy 150). If the date(s) of the required absence is not known in advance
as it is linked to other conditions, the relevant forms should be submitted with as much lead
time as possible in advance of the required absence. These forms are available at http://
www.ryerson.ca/senate/forms/relobservforminstr.pdf. Students are encouraged
to examine the Ryerson Religious Observance calendar (available at http://www.ryerson.
ca/humanrights/religious-cultural-observances/) at their earliest convenience.
3. Students who need academic accommodation support should register with the Academic
Accommodation Support office (formerly called the Access Centre). Before the first graded
work is due, registered students should inform their instructors through an Accommodation
Form for Professors that they are registered with Academic Accommodation Support and
what accommodations are required.
4. If a test is missed for a valid reason as described above, there will be a make-up test soon after
the test. PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO ADDITIONAL MAKE-UP TESTS.
Make-ups should cover the same material as the original assessment but need not be of an
identical format.
5. Students who miss a final exam for a verifiable reason and who cannot be given a make-up
exam prior to the submission of final course grades, mainly in three days after the final exam,
6. If proper documentation is not received within reasonable time, the mark for the missed
evaluation will be zero.
2. Labs meet once a week, starting the week of January 16-20, 2017.
3. Each student must attend the lab section indicated in his/her individual timetable. Do not
attend a different lab section. Your name will not appear on the class list. Please check your
schedule carefully to be certain that you are going to the correct lab section.
4. Unless indicated otherwise, there will be a quiz during the weekly labs in the following
weeks:
Quiz 1 (Week of Jan. 23-27)
Quiz 2 (Week of Feb. 13-17)
Quiz 3 (Week of Mar. 6-10)
Quiz 4 (Week of Apr. 3-7)
5. Students who cannot be present for a quiz because of illness should follow the same procedure
as for a missed test, outlined above. If a quiz is missed with a valid reason, then the students
quiz mark will be averaged over the remaining quizzes. THERE WILL BE NO ADDITIONAL
QUIZZES. If proper documentation is not received within three days, the mark for the missed
quiz will be zero.
Additional Considerations
1. If your classroom is in DSQ, you will need to bring your Ryerson Photo ID every lecture in
order to enter the classroom.
3. Student Learning Support can provide help with the material in this course (among many
other things); find the Math Hub on the 4th floor of SLC.
4. Study Halls before each midterm will be organized through the First Year Engineering Office.
5. Use of electronic devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops will not be allowed during
lectures unless the instructor explicitly states otherwise.
