Assignment 4: Heat Integration

Figure 1: Main flowsheet.

The components involved are methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and water. The unit
and base method are ENG and WILSON, respectively.

Figure S1: Input stream 1.

The information of blocks is explained as follows.

There are 2 separators (Sep2), i.e. B1 and B2, 4 heaters, i.e. B3, B4, B5 and B6.

The input specification and outlet flash of Sep2 in block B1 is shown in Figure B1.1
and B1.2, respectively.

Figure B1.1: Specification of Sep2 in block B1

Figure B1.2: Outlet flash of Sep2 in Block 1.

The input specification and outlet flash of Sep2 in block 2 is shown in Figure B2.1
and B2.2, respectively.

Figure B2.2: Outlet flash of Sep2 in Block 2

The specification for heaters B3, B4, B5 and B6 is shown in Figure B3, B4 B5 and B6,
respectively.

Questions:

1. Specify the simulation results of four heaters which consist of:

1.a. All of material stream condition (it can be seen in Results summary>
stream).

1.c. Results of separation, Sep2, B1 and B2:split fraction in outlet stream

1.d Results of heaters, B3 B4, B5, B6: temperature outlet and heat duty

2. Use two HeatX block (design mode) with a countercurrent and constant U (=50
Btu/hr-sqft-R ) to replace four heaters. Specify the simulation results of two heatX
which consist of:

2.a. All of material stream condition (it can be seen in Results summary>
stream).

2.d Summary Results of heatX: actual exchanger area and UA.

3.Repeat the task 2 using a concurrent heat exchanger. Compare the results to task
2. How do the results compare? What is primary source of differences?
