Okay, as I hate T4, but like Traveller's universe, I started playing the
original Traveller again. I even went as far as to write a character
generator for it. The rules are okay, but sort of clunky in places. So, I've decided to try to convert them to West End's D6 rules. Plus, I can steal stuff from Star Wars that way (Ewoks!). (Actually, T4 is sort of the reverse of D6, with the target number and Skill Level changing places) Has anyone else tried to do the same thing? At any rate, I'm looking for some feedback, particularly about the skills. I've tested them a little, but not much. The thing that's mostly bother me is this: I have the conversion from CT as 1 skill level = 1D of skill in D6. It seems to work okay, but I wonder if it should instead be 1 skill level = 1D+1? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------------------------- D6 Traveller --------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------------------------- I) Introduction D6 Traveller is an adaption of Traveller (primarily the Classic rules and setting), to a game system called 'D6' D6 is a universal and generic game system published in 1996 by West End games. It's widely availible in game shops, and is relatively cheap $10 new. The D6 system itself is essentially the rule mechanics behind West End Game's extremely successful "Star Wars" role playing game There are many advantages of using the D6 for Traveller. The first and formost, is that is it a quick, easy, and modern system. Not to say that the Classic Traveller system is bad. It's certainly not, in my mind, it's the 2nd best rules system Traveller has had (TNE was the best, though it suffered from problems). By using D6, you get a better skill resolution system. Plus, there's another interesting factor. Because D6 uses essentially the same system as Star Wars: The Role Playing Game, with D6 Traveller you can now use Star Wars stuff in the Traveller universe To briefly explain the D6 system. Each statistic is rated by the number of dice plus a number of pips. Each skill is rated the same, starting at the statistic it defaults from. To perform a skill, you simply roll a number of dice equal to the skill rating, and see if you've acheived the target number (from 0 to 31+, which 11-15 being average difficulty) II) Statistics Just like Classic Traveller, there are 6 stats. Strength, Dexterity, Endurance, Intelligence, Education, and Social Standing. If you are converting from Traveller: The New Era, the names are somewhat different, but it's easy to associate them. Strength - Equivalient to the D6 Strength Dexterity - This encompasses both the D6's Reflexes and Coordination Endurance - This is equivalent to D6's Endurance Intelligence - This is equivalent to D6's Intellect statistic Education - This is equivalent to D6's Knowledge statistic Social Status - This has no easy D6 equivalent, the closest is Confidence Plus for some characters: Psionics - Same as D6's Psionics Optional Stat: Charisma - D6's Charm statistic. Most versions of Traveller don't use this stat, but T:TNE does. III) Skills These skills come from Classic Traveller. See those rules for complete descriptions, but you can probably guess what they are. Several are also in the D6 book. If you are using Charisma as a stat, and it says (or Cha) ,use Charisma in place of the stat specified first Skill Name - Controlling Stat ------------------------------------------------ Pilot - Dex Gambling - Int Sport - Dex Carousing - Endurance Instruct - Education Blade - dex Navigation - Intel Brawling - Str Computer - Intel Bribery - Intel (or Cha) Engineering - Edu Forgery - Edu Gunnery - Dex Streetwise - Int (or Cha) Medical - Edu Leader - Soc (or Cha) Forward Obs - Intel Administration - Edu Steward - Dex (or Cha) Jack of all Trades - Edu Mechanical - Edu Electronics - Edu Tactics - Intel Ship's Boat - Dex Atv - Dex Grav - Dex Guncombat - Dex Liason - Soc (or Cha) Vehicle - Dex Prospecting - Intel Demolitions - Intel Gravitics - Intel Zero G Combat - Dex Ship Tactics - Intel Interrogation - Intel Recruiting - Soc (or Cha) Bowcombat - Dex Recon - Endurance Hunting - Intel Communications - Edu Battledress - Dex IV) Converting from Traveller to D6 Traveller A) Statistics: Traveller / D6 Traveller ( I used the real number instead of Traveller's Psuedo-Hexadecimal version) 1 = "+1" 2 = "+2" 3 = "1D" 4 = "1D+1" 5 = "1D+2" 6 = "2D" 7 = "2D+1" 8 = "2D+2" 9 = "3D" 10 = "3D+1" 11 = "3D+2" 12 = "4D" 13 = "4D+1" 14 = "4D+2" 15 = "5D" B) Skills Skills vary greatly from the different Traveller systems, so there are different conversion rules. i) Classic Traveller 1 Skill Level = 1D Example: Homer has a Dex of 9, and a Rifle Skill of 3. Under D6 system, he has a Dex of 3D and a Rifle of 6D ii) Mega Traveller I don't play MegaTraveller (never have), but these are from Traveller 2300AD, which I think might use the same rules. 1 Skill Level = 2 pips Conversion Chart 1 = + 2 pips 2 = 1D +1 3 = 2D 4 = 2D +2 5 = 3D +1 6 = 4D 7 = 4D +2 8 = 5D +1 9 = 6D etc; iii) Traveller TNE ? It's been ages since I've played T4, and no longer have the rulebook. I'd be inclined to use the MT chart. Or perhaps, iv) Marc Millers Traveller (T4) ? I haven't had much experience with it and no longer have the rulebook. I'd be inclined to use the MT chart. V) Personal Weapons and Armor A) Classic Traveller Weapons Essentially equal to the stats given in the D6 book. A Body Pistol is a .22, Autopistol is .44 Mag, Revolver is .357 Magnum. The Autorifle and Rifle are .223 Nato. If you want to use 7.62mm Nato, you should probably increase damage by a pip or two. Melee weapons are sort of odd - they follow the CT scale. Body Pistol 3D Autopistol 4D+1 Revolver 4D SMG 4D Shotgun 7D Carbine 5D Rifle 6D AutoRifle 6D ACR 6D+2 Laser Carbine 7D Laser Rifle 8D Dagger Str +2 Blade Str +2 Foil Str +1 Sword Str +1D+2 Cutlass Str +2D Broadsword Str +2D+2 (This is actually a two handed sword) Classic Traveller Armor You can wear Reflec or Ablat with Cloth, Mesh or Jack. Yes, it's very difficult to wound someone wearing Combat Armor. That's why they invented Plasma and Fusion Rifles (which I'll have to add when I get the Traveller Book) Jack +1D Projectile and Melee Weapons Only Mesh +2D vs. Projectile and Melee Weapons Only Cloth +3D vs. Projectile and Melee Weapons Only Reflec +6D vs Laser Weapons Only Ablat +5D vs. Laser Weapons Only Vacc Suit +3D Projectile and Melee Weapons Only Combat Armor +7D vs. All Weapons, -2D Dexterity Battle Dress +7D vs. All Weapons, Str Doubled VI) Damage System Use whichever system you like. I personally think the 5 Wounds system works better for Traveller.
