CONNECTING TO THE TEXT: THE FIRST FEW
PAGES

The first few pages of any piece of writing can give us a

lot of information about what to expect in the rest of the
text. Looking carefully at the opening of a text can give
useful information to help us get more out of the rest of
the text. After reading the first three pages of the novel
you chose, answer the following questions:

1. STYLE: How would you describe the writing style of

the novel (formal, informal, poetic, casual, descriptive,
flowing, choppy, etc)?:
2. TONE and MOOD: What is the Tone and the Mood
being set?:

3. DICTION: What do you notice about the diction

(word choices) in the novel (simple words, big words,
suggestive words, words meant to be taken more
literally, etc)?:

5. POINT OF VIEW: From Whose Point of View is this

Story Being Told?:

6. NARRATIVE PRESENCE: How Would You

Characterize the Narrator? Does He/She/It seem to care
for some characters over others. Are they matter of
fact? Limited in their knowledge? Omnipotent in their
knowledge? How would you characterize they way they
feel about the events they are narrating?

7. TIME MANAGEMENT: How do you think time will be

managed in this novel? Will it cover action over many
years, or in a relatively short period of time? Will it jump
around through time or move in a linear fashion?:

8. PLACE: What is the Place, or Setting?:

9. MOTIF: Based on what youve read so far, what do

you think will be a motif, or repeating idea or image, in
this novel?:

10. THEME: Based on what youve read so far, what

are some themes and/or thematic statements that will
be explored in this novel?:

11. PACE: Pace is different from Time Management in

that Pace is what the tempo of the writing is in real time,
as you read. What pace do the descriptions and the
actions move at. Does the novel move quickly, leisurely,
in fits and starts, etc?:
12. CHARACTERS: What characters are introduced and
what do we know about them?

13. EXPECTATIONS: What instructions for reading are

being given? What are the implied rules and
expectations the author is suggesting you will need to
follow if you are going to get the most out of this text?
Come up with five expectations of you the book seems
to be demanding of you:
