Abstract
The purposeof this paper is to offer up a different take on the meaningof the exaltation and
debilitationpointsof the planetsbasedon observableperiodiccyclesin nature.

Referenccsin Astrolory Texts

The two main referencesto exaltationand debilitation points are in the Brihat ParasharaHora
Shastraby Parash&r&, & Hindu astrology text from the ?th-8th century CE; and The Book of
Instructionin the Elementsaf theArt of Astrologt by Albiruni, anArabic astrologytext from the
1lth centuryCE. Thetwo maintraditions'exaltationpointsareasfollows:

Mercury 15oVirgo 15"Virgo

Jupiter 5oCancer 15oCancer

The Sun, Jupiter, and Saturnare the only planetsthat dif;fer in exaltationdegreesfrom the two
traditions.Rahuand Ketu do not haveexaltationsin the Hindu tradition. Debilitation degreesare

PracticalApplication

Exaltationanddebilitationof a planetaretypically usedin determiningif a planetwill be ableto

manifestits qualitiesor not, respectively. In someastrologicalsystems, like Hindu astrology,
planetsin exaltationare given the highestvalue of 60 points in a sexagesimalpoint systemoand
planetsin debititationaregiven 0 pointsothe lowestvalue.Practicalapplicationof exaltationand
debilitation of the planets in astrology has met with limited successand rnuch critique by
contemporaf,y astrologerssuchthat usageof exaltationanddebilitationpoints areoften only used
by astrologersworking with traditironalastrologysystems.A comrnoncritique of the exaltation
and debilitationsystemsis the placementof a planet'sexaltationand debilitationsign doesnot
seemto flow with the principles and correspondences of mainstreamastrologytechniquesand
dosignations. For example, how can Mars be exaltedin Capricorn, ruled by Saturnowhen Saturn
is debilitatedin Aries, ruledby Mars?

Another issue is with the etymology of "exaltation" and o'debilitationo'and ttre epithetsof the
planetsdo not match the actual observablephenomenaof the tropical zodiac sign in which the
planetis eitherexaltedor debilitated. For example, the Sunis not observablyconsideredexalted
at the time of year whenthe Sunis at 10" Aries (-March 3l st in the Gregoriancalendarsystem)
with tlre Hindu sy$temnor 19" Aries (*April gth in the Gregoriancalendarsystem)with the
Arabic system. The Sunwould be consideredexaltedby its observablephenomcnawhen it is 90"
progressedin the tropical zodiac at 10" of Cancer(Hindu system)or 19" of Cancer(Arabic
system)when the summerseasonis underwayin the northernhemispherearound July 2nd or
July 1lth, respectively.

Another exampleeoncernsthe epithetsfor Jupiter and Venus.Jupiter's epithet is the giver of

pleasantnessand Venusoepithetis the giver of vigor. Jupiteris often associatedwith wealth and
benefice.Jupiteris exaltedat 5o or 15oof Cancerdependingon whstherone is usingthe Hindu
or Arabic system, respectively. If one would be living off the land and very susceptibleto the
environmentalcycles, like the ancientpeople were, then the time of year representedby 5o or
15" Cancer, late June/earlyJuly, would not be represerrted by much pleasantness in the northern
hemispheregiven the cropsare just startingto grow at this time of year.Applying the samelogic
as was donefor Sun and moving 90u forwardto 5" or 15oLibra (late September/early October)
would show Jupiter's qualities at their apex during the harvest seasonexperiencedby most
civilizations in the northernhemisphereat this time of year.

@2009-2014MichaelDouglasNeely
Venusis often associated with vigorobeauty, love, andvessels.Venusis exalted at 27oof pisces,
which is aroundMarch l Stheachyear.Thereis not a lot of vigor,
beauty,or noticeablevesselsat
their apexat this time of year. This is the time of yearwhennatureis
slowly beingreleasedfrom
the grip of the winter seasonin the northernhemisphere.Fastforward
90owhen Venusis at 27o
Gemini aroundJune 19th in the northernhemispherewhen natureis
at its most beautiful with
lush lawns,geminatingandpollinatingplants,andweddingsgalore.The apex
of Venuswould be
a much betterfit at this progressedtime of year.

ProposedResolutionof planetary Dignities

With the examplesgiven in the previous paragraphs, the major hypothesisof

this paper is to
recalibratethe exaltationanddebilitationpoints of the visible planetsfrom how
they aretypically
assignedby both fiaditional md contemporaryastologers. The recalibration
of the visible
planetswould mimic the sine wave patternsfound in nature that have planet
a go through its
uniquelife cycle of upswing, climax, downswing, and anti-climaxin the tropical
zodiac.Some
examplesof thesesinewavepatternsobservedin natureareas follows:

Life Cycte Upswing Climax Ilownswing Anti-climax

Day Morning Noon Evening Midnight
Luner Qrarter Moon Full Moon QuarterMoon New Moon
Waxing Waning
Year Spnng Summer Fall Winter
Human Life Birth Adult Retirement kath

@2009-2014MichaelDouglasNeely
This recalibrationwouldrequireastrologers
to changethe traditionalnotionof whatexaltation
and debilitation points represent. In particular, it would involve changing the term "exaltation'oto
the term "upswing" and changing the term "debilitation" to the term 'odownswing". From this
point onwards I will often use the terms 'oupswingo'and "downswing" when I am speakingof the
terms "exaltation" and "debilitation", respectively, to properly match a planet's term to its
dignity. When all the planets are put within this sine wave framework the following table can be
created:

The cardinalor movablesignshavefour planets(the Sun,Saturn,Marsoand Jupiter)in them,the

out. Saturn is "The Son of the Sun." Jupiter is the "heavy one" while Mars is the 'thin waisted

two planets. It is also very interesting that the two planets in the dual signs (Mercury and Venus)
look very much alike with the exception of Mercury having a crescent on top of its glyph.

Mathematicsl Symmetrieswithin a ProposedRank of the Planetary Life Cycles

With the proposedsine wave life cycle framework some interestingmathematicalsymmetries

also come up and point to the more symmetical of the two most common exaltationand
debiliation systems(i.e., Arabic and Hindu) when proposingthe phasesof the planeary life
cycleswithin the sexagesimal(0-60) numberingsystemthat underliesall traditional astrology
calculations,in which the exaltationanddebilitationprinciplesare based.

In tlre Brihat Parsshars Hors Shastra an exalted/upswingplanet would receive t rupo (60
virupas)anda debilitated/downswing planetwould receive0 virupa* In the proposedphasesthe
life cycle stationswould receivethe following amountof virupos:

I believethe thsoreticalhigh and low of the virupa totals of the Arabic systemshould also be at
420virupas (7 planetsx 60 virupas) and 0 virupas (7 planetsx 0 virupas),respectively,because
