Lab Report #1 Nancy Jaax. September 26, 1983 (pg.

86-87)
Today was an insane day for me. I was entering the level 4 lab today to dissect an ebola
infected monkey. I was using a rongeur to open pull out the brain when I suddenly realised a
tear in my suit. There was a tear in my glove! That meant the ebola infected blood was inside
my glove! But then it got worse, the space suit I was wearing inside the yellow suit had a leak
meaning the blood was on my hand! My hands felt cold and clammy. I had to take a 7 minute
long decon shower to wash off my suit. Relievingly I realised that the blood was my own blood
on my hand from a cut on my palm. There may have been ebola blood on the suit. But it didnt
touch my hand. Whew! That was a relief.

Lab Report #2 Tom Geisbert. November 17, 1989 (pg. 182)

The healthy cells that were infected by monkey O53 looked like moth eaten carpet. They were
all sick, something was killing them fast. All the flasks of cells looked the exact same; There
were holes in the layer of cells clinging to all the flasks. The cells looked puffy and swollen, and
as I looked closer there seemed to be small pepper granules on the cells. I soon concluded that
they were indeed crystals inside the cells. The fluid was milky and clouded with dead cells.
Peter Jahrling said it, smells like Welch's grape juice, but I don't think it has a smell. I spun the
fluid in the centrifuge and a small black, button of grayish ooze collected at the bottom of the
test tube. I dont think this is the Simian flu we all think it is. I think it may be something much

worse.
Lab Report #3 Tom Geisbert. November 27, 1989 (pg. 193-197)
I now have a terrible feeling in my gut. Earlier today I cut up the button of viruses the size of a
bread crumb. I had placed the cut up slices into my electron microscope, and what I saw
shocked me. As I was peering at the dead cell I noticed something, the cell wasnt just dead-it
was destroyed. It had been blown apart, and was crawling with worms. I could tell you I was
petrified, I believe this is Marburg! A level 4 biohazard! I shouldve been wearing a suit for this! I
also was breathing this stuff in when I sniffed at the test tube! Did I have a headache earlier? I
dont know, but this stuff is incredibly dangerous. I still couldnt believe it, the worms were so
thick they couldve only been one thing, a filovirus. I think we may have an epidemic on our
hands.

Lab Report #4 Peter Jahrling. November 28, 1989 (pg. 214)

Today was a stressful day. First I was stuck in a space suit made for Peter Dinklage, and I'm
claustrophobic. And second I made a terrible discovery. I was testing the virus to make sure it
really was Marburg. I had samples of various infected blood. They were from various people
famous for carrying the virus. The test took hours and boy did it deliver. The virus would glow
when it reacted with the sample of the same virus. One sample was Marburg, the next was
Ebola Sudan, and the last was Ebola Zaire. I tested all 3 samples and it turns out it wasn't
Marburg at all, it was Ebola Zaire! This situation just became worse.
