Welcome to this new and exciting block which offers a challenging ranges of
disciplines that will make up your study of medical professionalism. As we know, doctor is a
profession that place humanity as its central priority. We have to assure that this key principle
will always be our foundation of thought, emotion and action of every doctors in daily practice.
This fundamental principle is called professionalism.
Pelita Harapan University realize the significant of developing and maintaining the high
standard of behavior for every medical graduate, mostly in encountering globalization. The
relationship between doctors and society, the doctor-patient relationship, and the environments
in which doctors undertake thier training and their practice, have all changed. Therefore, Pelita
Harapan University has implemented the course, Doctor Professionalism Ethics and Society
(DPES), to ensure that our graduate not only mastered a large body of medical knowledge and
clinical skills, but also a competent professionals who have a social, cultural and ethical
awareness, who share, interpret, and transfer medical school experiences and knowledge into
effective actions to better themselves and others.
Doctor Professionalism Ethics and Society block will be started at semester 4th and
ended at semester 7th. Each semester has a specific theme of discussion. This block
comprises of lectures, group discussion, role modelling, and case based learning as well.
This should be a great block for you with full exposure to all material that will
enlightened you as a medical professional to be, so keep busy and good luck!

Core competencies
Able to explore and exchange information verbally and non-verbally with patients of any
age, family members, communities, colleagues and other professionals.
2. Collect information
Able to use open-ended and closed questions in acquiring information (move from
open to closed questions)
Ask for clarification from the patient about any of his/her statements which cannot
be clearly understood
Use clinical reasoning in exploring the history of the present illness, family history,
and history of past illness
Conduct data exploration logically and efficiently
Not give education and explanation prematurely while collecting information

Students will learn to create a 'Personal Strategy' to develop their personality based on
Viktor Frankls formula.
Students will also learn the role of cognition in the patterns of behavior and affection.

ASSESSMENT
Attendance requirements and prerequisites to sit the examinations:
80 % attendance for all activities
Exemptions permitted with Doctors certificate, event of Family crisis, disaster or
extraordinary reason with prior permission from tutor. Further criteria according to UPH
criteria for exemption
3. Summative: students will be assessed at the end of the block on the following
performance in tutorial sessions:
Preparation.
Participation.
Professional Behavior.
Passing grade at UPH is 60.00% (C) and will be determined through recognized
Standards Setting processes. Relationship to the Grading system and GPA is as
indicated in the table.
