TheAcademicWordList(AWL)wasreleasedintheyear2000byAverilCoxheadfromthe
SchoolofLinguisticsandAppliedLanguageStudiesatVictoriaUniversityofWellington,New
Zealand.Thelistcontains570wordfamilieswhichwereselectedbyanalysingacorpusof
millionsofwordsfromover400academictexts.Wordsweretakenfrom28different
academicsubjectareaswithinthedisciplinesofArts,Commerce,LawandScience,sothey
arerelevantforallareasofacademicstudy.Thelistof570wordswasthendividedinto
tensublists,withthemostfrequent60wordsinSublist1,totheleastfrequentwordsin
Sublist10.Thelistexcludesthemostfrequent2000wordsofEnglish.
TheAWLwasdevelopedtoprovidelearnersofacademicEnglishtotargettheirvocabulary
developmentforallacademicdisciplines.Itwasprimarilymadesothatitcouldbeusedby
teachersaspartofaprogrampreparinglearnersfortertiarylevelstudyorusedbystudents
workingalonetolearnthewordsmostneededtostudyattertiaryinstitutions.The
completelist(below)hastheheadwords(themostcommonformofthewordfamily)forall
570words,andincludesthesublist(110)thatitcomesfrom.
Wehaveprovidedyouwithhandoutswhichcontainexercisesbasedoneachoftheten
sublists.Theyhavebeendesignedtohelpyoudevelopyourvocabularyofthesewords.
