CENG 4253: Assignment 7 Due date: November 10th, 2016

Question 1:
Using the information presented in the textbook Formwork for Concrete Structures, knowing that the
pressure is 150 lb/sf, the load duration is 5 days, the moisture is 17% and the temperature is 25 oC, design the
following:

a) The spacing between the joists, knowing that the plyform is of class I 1/2 in thick covering 3 spans
with the face grain crossing the supports.
b) The spacing between the stringers knowing that the size and grade of the joists are 4 4 No. 1 grade
Douglas Fir-Larch and covering 3 spans.
c) The spacing between the shores knowing that the size and grade of the stringers are 4 6 No. 1 grade
Douglas Fir-Larch and covering 3 spans.
d) The cross-section, compressive strength, and Youngs Modulus of shores knowing that they are 11 ft
high, with pin-pin end conditions and located at the points shown in Figure 1.

Question 2:
A wall form 11 ft high is filled with 140 lb per cu ft concrete. Calculate and plot the lateral concrete load for
the following cases:
a) The concrete is Type I without any admixtures and placed at a rate of 5 ft per hr.
b) The concrete is Type I without any admixtures and placed at a rate of 9 ft per hr.
c) The concrete is Type I with 40% fly ash and a retarder, placed at a rate of 5 ft per hr.
d) The concrete is Type I with 40% fly ash and a retarder, placed at a rate of 9 ft per hr.
e) Comment on the effect of adding chemical and mineral admixtures on the lateral load of concrete.
f) Comment on the effect of increasing the placement rate on the lateral load of concrete.

Question 3:
A column form 10 ft high is filled with 160 lb per cu ft concrete. Calculate and plot the lateral concrete load
for the following cases:
a) The concrete is Type I without any admixtures and placed at a rate of 6 ft per hr.
b) The concrete is Type I without any admixtures and placed at a rate of 11 ft per hr.
c) The concrete is Type I with 40% fly ash and a retarder, placed at a rate of 6 ft per hr.
d) The concrete is Type I with 40% fly ash and a retarder, placed at a rate of 11 ft per hr.
e) Comment on the effect of adding chemical and mineral admixtures on the lateral load of concrete.
f) Comment on the effect of increasing the placement rate on the lateral load of concrete.
