BorninYumaArizonaonMarch31st1927,Chavezwasborntoimmigrantparents.
DuringthefirsttenyearsofChavezslife,hisfamilymovedupanddownthestateofArizona.
DuringthosetenyearsChavezexperiencedterribleworkingconditions,corruptlabor
contractors,mergerwagesforbackbreakingwork,andracism.Thenin1952catholicpriest
DonaldMcDonnelandFredRoss,andFredRoss,anorganizerwiththeCommunityService
Organization,recruitedChaveztobeapartoftheirgroup.ShortlyafterjoiningChavezbecamea
nationaldirector.Laterin1962Chavezdecidedtoresignsothathecoulddevotehisenergiesto
organizingaunionforfarmworkers.ChavezfoundedtheNationalFarmWorkersAssociation
laterthatyear.
In1968ChavezandhisorganizationjoinedthestrikeagainstDelanoGrapeFarms,and
calledforaboycottagainstallCaliforniaGrapes.DelanoGrapeswasoneofthemany
organizationsthattreatedworkersbadly.Thisboycottwasoneofthefirstthingsthatmade
Chavezandhisorganizationnationallyknown.Thebattlewithgrapefarmersandthefightfor
betterpayandfairworkingconditionswouldlastforyears.FinallyChavezwonmanyvictories
forworkersandgotseveralworkerstosigncontractswiththeunion.HoweverChavezfaced
morechallengeswithotherfarmersandtheTeamMastersunion.Inconclusionthisishowthe
grapestrikemadeChavezsorganizationnationallyknown.
SinceChavezwasalabororganizerhelednonviolentprotestsinordertogetfairworking
conditions.Heledmanymarches,calledseveralboycotts,andevenledsomehungerstrikes.
Chavezbroughtawarenesstotheharmfulpesticidesthatworkersareexposedtodaily.In1992
ChavezwasawardedthePaceminTerrisAward,acatholicpeaceaward.Thenin1994Chavez
wasawardedthePresidentialMedalofFreedom.Chavezsdedicationearnedhimseveral
supporterssuchasRobertKennedy.Sadlyin1995itisbelievedthatChavezdiedasaresultfrom
oneofthehungerstrikes.Chavezsorganizationsarestillactivetoday.Inconclusionthisisall
