Inspection of the ship- Documents/Instruments

1. Inspections generalities :
Inspection of the ship is an activity executed in the shipyard made by :
-Maker :
Maker makes in inspections on the flow process and on phases by QA/QC
inspectors
-Ship-owner :
makes inspectors by designated own inspectors
Ship-owner names an inspection team under his control
-Society Classification :
makes inspections by individual inspectors, inspections requested by class
Other authorities : naval authorities , paint applicators.
All parts issue documents according to the inspection

Inspection is ruled by Contract and ISO 9001 -2008

Inspection is based on Is based on:

Quality standard of the Maker, agreed by Owner

IACS (International association of classification societies.ltd)
Shipbuilding and repair quality standard -rev 4 aug . 2008, no.
47 ; (Z23 )
Classification rules as BV, GL, DNV, ABS

Details of inspection are off lighted in the kick of meeting, start of the
contract.

a.Inspections are made in time as all during construction

b.Inspection on periods time

c.Inspection at the delivery time .

Inspections are clasificated as:

Regular technical inspections

Those inspections are made during construction till all tanks,
cofferdams, spaces and systems are technical and pressure tested.
Commissioning as shore tests and sea trials.
Commissioning means start of units , test systems in function .
Part of the systems are tested on shore (HAT -harbor acceptance test),
and part are tested on the see (SAT - sea acceptance test )

Type of inspections are done by :

-visual ,
- measurements,
-destructive and nondestructive tests (NDT),
-Other classification: technical inspection (function test) and pressure
test ,
Special tests as deadweight test, inclining test

Inspections are based on following documents:

1. Inspection plan
2. Request of inspection /Communication form
3. Measurement protocol
4. NDT tests
5. Certificates by maker, class.
6. Commissioning book (HAT, SAT)
7. Remarks list
8. MOM (minutes of meeting )
9. Other reports (paint man report , naval authority report , class
certificates)

Inspection plan is issued by the maker distributed to the owner and

Class .
This plan has to be approved by parts and is mandatory.

1.Inspection plan contain:

Inspection Number ,
Phase , activity
Inspection activity
Register document (request of inspection , measurement sheet )All
those documents are attach to the inspection
Involment : Shipyard, Owner , Class as Hold , Witness , Random
inspections .
Not all points are common for parts involve, maker, owner, and class.
All parts have to follow the inspection plan , amendments could be
agreed during inspection between parts .

Subcontractor activity is included in the inspection plan as electrical

part, accommodation work, painting work ,other works .

All inspections are coded. Structure of the inspection plan is a common

instrument for the shipyard in particular for ships profile. In general this
inspection is issued by quality department.

Inspection plan could be a subject for audit as part of quality manual.

2. Request of inspection sheet
Request of inspection is an internal document made for inspection of
QC on item.
After it was accepted by QC inspectors Communication sheet is
issued.

Communication sheet
For any planed inspection as per inspection plan a request of
inspection sheet is issued by Quality Dept.
This is directed to Owner and Class inspectors by mail, fax .
This document contains:
Hull no
Place , date, verification
Result of inspection (class and client )
QC reply
By which inspector
Base sheet can find:
Symbols for QC reply
Result of verification

This document is dedicated to Class and Client (owner) and managed by QC

inspector.

All remarks have to be closed (optimal case) and final classification is made
in upper right corner as accepted, unaccepted, remarks, cancelled.

Unaccepted communications are dealing to a special meeting at the delivery

time between parts in order to solve the remarks.

3. Measurement protocols

The measurement protocols are document wich refers to hull and

systems data which have to be cheched by measurements . Data are
numerical, cantitativ not calitative records .

In every protocol are mentioned theoretical data , accepted deviations .

The protocols refers to hull sections, assembling hull ,parts as frames ,

hatches , cargo dimensions , container lashings arrangement

Main dimensions , drafts, plimsom mark , bottom line are also protocols
.

There are protocols referring to the mechanical parts as main shaft,

couplings, main engine, rudder, and propeller.
All protocols are presented together with communication sheet and
have to be signed by Class and Client (in case) .

4. Non Destructive Tests

Most of the test are NDT , means DPL (deep penetration liquids), and
RX .
Also ultrasonic test is used for watertight compartments
The major test are requested by Class and less Client .
RX tests are carried out by specialized personal requested based on
the initial radiographic plan , mentioned all positions to be tested.
Results are checked, and certificates are issued. In case results are
not satisfactory test will be repeated.
Some cases magnetic powder is used to material continuity.

5. Certificates of Maker and Class

Material as plates, profiles, pipe class 1,2,3 , subassemblies , cast

materials , need to have maker and class certificates . All certificates
are presented to the local class surveyor. In this category are included
and part buyers supply materials.
Marking has to be checked to correspond with document number.

6. Commissioning book

Commissioning is divided in two parts HAT and SAT

HAT includes files of test protocols, means parameters, conditions, as
harbor tests. In this part included systems as CO2, bilge , fi-fi, hatches
, lightning , Diesel generators , Emergency DG, exhaust gas system ,
air system .
SAT includes sea trials test, main engine, stearing , anchoring ,
performance , noise , vibrations

7. Remarks list

A condense list , reflecting inspection levels is the remark list . The

root of this document is communication documents . This document
is updated weekly with all remarks from communications, which are
still outstanding .
The scope of this list is to support solving remarks in a proper way
and to give a general view of the quality of the inspections.
The list contains remarks from class and owner.
8. MOM (minutes of meeting)

This activity represents also an item of the quality manual

representing life communication between pars involved in ship
construction.
The meeting is focused on outstanding remarks list, solutions, and
targets.
Each meeting is ended by a protocol

9. Other reports

Other reports are based on the shipyard activity

Paint man report is a detailed documents including all data sheets for
all inspections made according paint specification.
Authority report includes specific inspections referring main systems
as ME , EDG , DG , propulsion , stearing , safety on board , fi-fi , CO2 .

Instruments and tools used in ship building

construction

Shipbuilding activity involves a lot of tool designated to support the

inspection.
There are classical tools and modern instruments. Instruments and
tools have to be safety, accurate, easy to maneuver, easy to be transported.
There are numerical and digital instruments, all of them have to be
checked (see quality manual- maintenance) by metrological laboratory.
According to this operation instruments have to be labeled, by date, next
verification, serial.
A short view on the shipbuilding tools and instruments :

Hull construction :
Straight bare deformations
Lead wire verticality
Piano wire linearity
Theodolite straightness-2D
Laser beam theodolite straightness 2D
Threedimensional laser thodolite 3 D
Welding calipper welding seam throat
Ruller distance
Weight gauge weight
Laser ruler distance
Dens meter water density for deadweight
U water tube watertight tanks
Manometer- pressure systems, tanks
Thermometer temperature
Digital infrared thermometer engine temp
Comparators radial and angular deviations
Paint
Elcho meter paint film thickness
Psihometer relative humidity
Paint cam wet paint film thickness

Using instruments and tools is made according procedures , statistic

practice and recording has to be applied. The record are mentioned in the
measurement sheets and reports . For major nonconformities pictures are
more useful (where the case ) beside instruments records .
