2 Overview

2.1 Feature Introduction

2.1.1 ZWF23-01-042 HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK Enhancement

ZTEs UMTS RAN supports the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement feature in 3GPP
R6. Before and after sending an ACK/NACK message through the HS-DPCCH, a UE
sends a PRE-AMBLE and a POST-AMBLE respectively. In this way, the Node B
improves the demodulation performance of HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK, and the UE reduces
the transmit power for the HS-DPCCH.

3 Technical Description

3.1 ZWF23-01-042 HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK

Enhancement

The HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement feature is introduced in 3GPP

Release-6. Before and after sending an ACK/NACK message through the HS-DPCCH, a
UE sends a Pre-amble and a Post-amble respectively. In this way, the Node B improves
the demodulation performance of HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK, and the UE reduces the
transmit power for the HS-DPCCH.

In the protocol, a new IE HARQ Preamble Mode is introduced in the Iub and Iur
interfaces to indicate whether the HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement
function is supported by the Node B and UEs. When HARQ Preamble Mode is set to
Mode 1, the HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement function is supported. When
HARQ Preamble Mode is Mode 0, HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement
function is not supported.

3.1.1 Processing Procedure of the RNC

The feature is controlled by the ULogicalRnc.ackNackEncInd parameter.

When all of the following conditions are met, the RNC will configure the HSDPA
HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement for a UE in the Iub interface.

1. The HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement feature parameter

ULogicalRnc.ackNackEncInd is set to Supported.

2. The UE supports the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement feature. The

HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement capability is obtained according to the IE
Access stratum release indicator in the RRC connection request. If the UE is
Release-6 or later version, the feature is supported. Otherwise, the feature is not
supported.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary 6

HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK Enhancement

In addition, the RNC determines whether the UE activates the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK
enhancement feature based on whether the Node B activates the HS-DPCCH
ACK/NACK enhancement feature. The procedure is as follows:

1. For the UEs that satisfy the above conditions, the RNC sets HARQ Preamble Mode
IE to Mode 1 and notifies it to the Node B by sending a radio link setup or
reconfiguration message.

2. After receiving the message that indicates HARQ Preamble Mode IE is Mode 1, the
Node B returns a response message that indicates whether to activate the
HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement feature according to the actual conditions. If
the Node B supports the feature, the HARQ Preamble Mode Activation Indicator is
contained in the response message.

3. If the HARQ Preamble Mode Activation Indicator is contained in the response

message from the Node B, the RNC instructs the UE to activate the HS-DPCCH
ACK/NACK enhancement feature by sending a message through the Uu interface.
After that, the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement feature is truly activated.
Otherwise, the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement feature is not activated.

The following figure gives an example about how the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK
enhancement feature is activated:

3.1.2 Processing Procedure of the Node B

If the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement feature is activated, the Node B detects the
DTX by using two TTIs. The Node B uses one TTI in R5. The advantage is that the
transmit power for ACK is reduced, and DTX is not mistaken for ACK.

After the use of the Pre-ambler/Post-ambler, the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK domain is

changed from 2 code words (R5) to 4 code words (R6), as shown in Figure 3-2. The code
words of ACK and NACK remain unchanged.

HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK Enhancement

1. When the first data PDU is transmitted in the HS-DSCH, the UE transmits a PRE
codeword in a HS-DPCCH HARQ-ACK field prior to transmitting the HARQ-ACK or
NACK after it detects the HS-SCCH channel. Therefore, the Node B has at least
two TTIs for detecting the DTX.

2. After transmitting an HARQ-ACK, the UE usually transmits a POST in the following

HARQ-ACK field if it does not detect an HS-DSCH data PDU in the next two
sub-frames.

6 Engineering Guide

6.1 Application Scenario

1. Application scenario for this feature

This feature can improve the demodulation performance of HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK

for the Node B. When the HS-DPCCH power remains unchanged, the number of
HARQ retransmissions due to incorrect demodulation of ACK/NACK can be
reduced, and the downlink throughput is increased. Therefore, it is recommended to
activate the feature when the HSDPA function is activated.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary 10

HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK Enhancement

When the uplink load is high, and it is expected to decrease the uplink interference
by decreasing the ACK/NACK power offset, it is recommended to activate the
feature.

2. Application conditions for this feature

Some UEs are not compatible with the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement
feature. Before the feature is activated, check whether there are R6 version and
later UEs that are incompatible with the feature.

6.2 Feature Activation Procedure

In the configuration resource tree, select Modify Area > Managed Element > UMTS
Logical Function Configuration > PLMN Relating Configuration > Logic RNC
Configuration, and set HSDPA HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK enhancement Support

6.5 Impact on the Network

1. Impact on Equipment Performance

None.

2. Impact on Network KPIs

Advantages of this feature:

This feature can improve the demodulation correctness of HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK.

When the HS-DPCCH power remains unchanged, the number of HARQ
retransmissions due to incorrect demodulation of ACK/NACK can be reduced, and
the downlink throughput is increased.

This feature can improve the demodulation performance of HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK.

When the probability of correct demodulation of HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK is higher
than the configured one, the requirement for the HS-DPCCH ACK/NACK power can
be reduced, for example, reducing the ACK/NACK power offset, so and the uplink
load is decreased, and the system capacity is improved.

Disadvantages of this feature:

None.
