Natural selection

. By:Pawat, Yada, Supawan, Janisa .

Learning Goals
1. Define "Evolution" & "Natural Selection".
2. Describe the adaptation.
3. Why adaptation is important?
What is Natural Selection?
Natural Selection

-Natural selection: is the process of organisms adapted to their environment in

order to survive and produce more offspring.

-Over the long time evolution can occur by

processes of natural selection.
What is Evolution?
Evolution
-Evolution: The process of change over
time

-Specifically, a change in the frequency of a

gene or allele in a population over time
Charles Darwin

-who is Charles Darwin?

-What did he do?

Charles Darwin
-Father of Evolution

-Darwin went on a 5-year trip around the world

-He famous obout the observations of organisms in

Galapagos Islands

ADAPTATION
OF ANIMALS AND PLANTS
What is adaptation?

The special characteristics that

enable plants and animals to be
successful in a particular
environment are called
adaptations
Camouflage is to blend in with its surroundings.

For example,
monarch butterfly is an
adaptation to warn predators
and prevent it from being eaten.
Adaptations afford the organism
a better chance to
survive
in its surroundings.
Desert Adaptations : Plants
Hot and extremely dry.
Some desert plants, such as the
cactus, have expandable stems for
storing water.
Other plants have adaptations that
reduce water loss from their leaves
for example, have small leaves.
Photosynthesis, which normally
occurs in green leaves, is carried out
in the stems, which are themselves
green with the pigment chlorophyll.
Desert Adaptations : Animals
Many are nocturnal, meaning active during the cool night rather than
the hot daylight hours.

Adaptations in Camels

Adaptation: Two rows of long

eyelashes

Function: Protect against blowing

sand and the sun
Adaptations in Camels

Adaptation: Fat stored in Adaptation: Thick fur

hump(s)
Function: Provide warmth during
Function: Help it to survive cold desert nights and insulation
long periods without food and against daytime heat
water
Tropical Rainforest Adaptations : Plants
The leaves of forest trees have adapted to cope with exceptionally high rainfall.
Many tropical rainforest leaves have a drip tip. It is thought that these drip tips
enable rain drops to run off quickly. Plants need to shed water to avoid growth of
fungus and bacteria in the warm, wet tropical rainforest.
Tropical Rainforest Adaptations : Gorillas
Both their hands and feet. Unlike other animals, this gives them the ability to grasp things in one
hand. Their fur serves three purposes :
Keeps them warm
camouflages them in the rainforest
protects them from insects like mosquitoes because of its thickness.
PoisonDart Frog
There are many different species of the poison dart
frog.

All of them have a vibrant skin colour that acts as a

warning to predators. This warning is of their
toxicity
