Essential Questions What properties of the cell
membrane allow it to regulate what comes in and out of the cell? Objectives Students will be able to recall the characteristics of the cell. Students will be able to identify what substances are regulated by the cell membrane. Students will be able to discuss how substances are regulated by the cell membrane. Vocabulary: Phospholipid bilayer; cytoplasm; extracellular membrane; Fluid Mosaic Model Estimated Time 50 minutes Materials Required Computer w/ access to PowerPoint and projector; student study guide notes Procedure BEFORE: BEFORE: Access Prior Knowledge ask students what they know about the organelle from yesterdays class on organelles. Show youtube video - The Cell Membrane DURING: PowerPoint focusing on the cell membrane. Topics in the PowerPoint will include o The phospholipid bilayer o The Fluid Mosaic Model o Function of proteins o Cytoplasm and Extracellular Fluid Have students complete guided notes packet as you go over PowerPoint. o Stop after each topic to ask key questions AFTER: Collect notes Exit ticket Explain the importance of the structure of a phospholipid when forming a membrane. Formative Assessment Collect notes to double check; exit ticket. Student Resources Study guide; exit ticket
