I. Title

Patterns with Paper Cutting

II. Grade:

Art 3

III. TEKS: 117.202 Art

IV. Objectives:

The student will learn how to create intricate cut paper designs as assessed by learning about patterns,
shapes, and lines to create detailed artwork by learning the techniques associated with cutting paper.

V. Activity:

Students will be given three colors of 12x12 construction paper. Onto the first layer of construction
paper the students will transfer their design in pencil, while leaving a 3/4' border all the way around.
This top layer design should be intricate and detailed, with multiple patterns blending into each other.
Once the border and design are drawn out the students will then cut out the shapes with an x-acto
knife. Once this layer is complete the students will then create a single pattern on the second layer,
once again making a 3/4 border. This is to be one single pattern created either out of the same shape or
same type of lines. They will then proceed to cut this second layer exactly like the first one. The third
layer does not get cut and remains solid.

VI. Instruction:

Day 1:
-Discuss the art of paper cutting. Show PowerPoint while discussing examples and the how tos of the
project.

-Students will be given a worksheet in which they will come up with 5 different types of patterns.

-Students will be given a sheet with a printed design of which they will use to practice cutting with the
x-acto knife.

-Student will need to draw out their first layer pattern and second layer pattern in their sketchbooks
before transferring them onto the construction paper. The first layer should be detailed and intricate,
full of multiple patterns, shapes, and lines. The second pattern is to be a single patter, consisting of
either the same shape or type of line.

Day 2:
-Ask students to transfer their designs onto the first layer. Once everything is drawn out the students
may begin to cut.
-Once the first layer is complete the students will need to draw their second pattern on the second layer
of construction paper. Once drawn out they may being the cutting process.

Day 3-8:
-Continue working until the first two layers have been cut, then glue all the layers on top of each other
to create a interesting and colorful piece of art.
