Dover Castle
History
Dover Castle was built between 1179 and 1188, it was a massive symbol of
King Henry II's power. The castle lies on the really beautiful white cliffs.
Dover Castle was also named as Key to England The nickname for the
castle comes from the history of Dover castle, which has included scenes
from almost every period in the United Kingdoms long account.
6
Henry II spent vast sums making Dover Castle the mightiest fortress in the
land. Yet, as John Gillingham argues, he did so not to protect his realm but to
save face following the murder of Thomas Becket
The king that started the building of the castle was Henry ll. Henry lived
from March 5, 1133 July 6, 1189. He lived in the royal house Plantagenet.
He had more nicknames: Henry Curtmantle, Henry FitzEmpress or Henry
Plantagenet. He married Eleanor of Aquitaine. Henry and Eleanor had eight
children, William, Henry, Richard, Geoffrey, John, Matilda, Eleanor, and Joan.
Thomas Becket was a close friend for him.

Interview 1. The way there we went to England (on the boat)
13
5 Have you ever been in the Netherlands?
We think the main difference is that Dutch people speak English and that
English people dont speak Dutch, the food and on the countryside Dutch
people are very open towards each other.
Yes, we enjoyed living in London when we were young, but now we are
retired and we dont like living in London anymore.
The weather is very rainy and England is very crowded and has busy traffic.
14
Interview 2. (The host family)
13 years
I have worked in schools with young adults who find it difficult to attend
school and have social problems. I wanted to return the young adults to
education. I liked the way I learnt new things from the young adults and also
wanted to know more of their habits. Thats why we want to be a host family,
we can learn a lot of culture from people from all over the world.
Well, Ive been to the Netherlands once and the things I still remember and
think of are the Dutch food, culture and landscape
The beach, during the summer months we spend our time there. We also
have a beach hut!
Supervet, its about all kinds of animals and very fun to watch.

Short diary

Wednesday, 20th April
At half past six, we leave school with two busses and we arrived at
11:30 in Calais. After the bus trip, we went with the ferry from Calais to
Dover. When we arrived in Dover we walked over the white cliffs. It was
really beautiful and you could make nice
pictures. We also made a group picture with all
students and teachers who were with us.
When we came in Canterbury we went to the
cathedral. We get a tour in the cathedral
from a nice woman and had to make a few
assignments. When you were finished with the assignments you could
go in the city of Canterbury. We went to shops and typical English
buildings. At half past six we met or host families and went with them
to their house.
In the morning we put on our clothes and had a nice breakfast. Then
we went to a drama workshop by Canterbury Steiner School. There we
had 2 hours a workshop. We rode back
to Canterbury centrum and ate there
our lunch in the park. After our lunch we
collected by Marlowe Theatre, There we saw
the musical A midsummer nights
dream. At five oclock we had a river
cruise. We had a nice man in our boat who told a lot about things we
saw. Then we went back to Westgate-on-sea and our host familys
picked our up.
20
The funny anecdote
We went to a drama workshop with everybody. There were five people who
gave lessons. Every one of them had a short time to do his/her thing.
Everything has to do with acting. By one person you had to play in a group
of 5 people. All the 5 players had to act 1 of the 5 main characters of the film
a midsummer nights dream. So you got for example, the hero or the
heroine. Somebody has to act a character, so I for example was the hero.
People in the audience (The other Classes who were with us) had to guess
what you were. Everybody was a bit shy so nobody was
acting really well. But then it was my turn. I made my
feel like a hero and walked on stage. I shouted with a
low voice: Here I am, this going to be the greats party
ever! and everyone laughed. I was proud on myself
because I have stage fright, but it was really nice to do.

Expectations
Im going to answer a few of the first 11 questions again to see how I after
the trip think about these things.
22
3. What do you expect it will be like?
Before: A huge boat.
After: My expectations were right, it was a huge boat. I didnt knew
that there were so big shops on the boat.
4. What do you expect your (host) family will be like?
Before: Kind and nice.
After: The woman and daughter were both really kind. It was clean, we
had good food, and everything was well.
5. What will be the main difference between Dutch and English houses?
Before: The style of the building.
After: The style of the houses were a bit different but not very much.
6. Which skills do you think you will be able to use during the trip?
Before: Asking questions in English.
After: I think that asking questions in English a good one is because
sometimes it was a bit hard to say the correct words.
7. What (new skills) do you expect to learn during the trip?
Before: Communicate with real English people.
After: I think that it went well to speak English. I could communicate
pretty with our host family so that was nice.
8. During the trip you will have to speak as much English as possible.
How are you going to stick to this?
Before: Ask my friends if they always want to speak English.
After: I asked my friends and they did, so we spoke the most of the
time English. Sometimes like in the evening, we spoke a bit Dutch but
then we fall asleep and the next morning we spoke English.
That was the assignment booklet. I really enjoyed the trip, it was very nice. I
also learned a lot more about Canterbury, so I am happy!
