standard/s
is the goal aligned with?

Standard 5 Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning

Is the goal well aligned with the focus areas of the standard? If not can
you re-write or refine the goal so it is more closely aligned with the
focus areas of the standard?

I think this goal does align with the focus area 5.1 of the standard. This is the
area that relates to assessing student learning and demonstrating an
understanding of assessment strategies including informal and formal,
diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning. My
goal was aimed at using that variety of assessing strategies to ensure that I am
not just using the one type, informal in the form of observations.

This is the only focus area under this standard that I think represents what I
wanted to achieve. I could change the smart goal to incorporate more of the
focus areas but I dont think that would be realistic for me and it would not be as
specific as I want it. I could also change the goal to have the specific formative,
summative etc assessment approaches but at that point in my placement I just
wanted to use a variety of different strategies and learn from my associate
teacher. I would not want this goal to change and make me have tunnel vision
categorising the ways I am assessing.

Why did you choose the goal? Make connections between your goal and
research, and examples of your practice

I chose to make this one of my goals as in previous placements I tended to stick


to the same assessment styles, mainly observation. Research has shown us how
important it is that as educators you are using a variety of different assessment
strategies for the students which include informal, formal, summative, formative

and diagnostic approaches. I really wanted to be aware of this when teaching


and consciously make the effort to use a variety and to use the resource of my
associate teacher to help build a repertoire of different assessment strategies
that are effective.

involve identifying theory that you need to explore or creating a new
focus for your next placement

For my next placement I would like to continue to focus on the different kinds of
assessment however now that I have had a chance to explore some different
ways of assessing from my previous placements I would like to now focus on the
kinds of assessing (informal, formal, diagnostic, formative and summative). I
would like to be conscious of which ones I am using and make sure that I am
using a variety of different ways to assess but to also make sure that the purpose
of the assessing also varies.
